How much will you lose on a drag truck if you dont run a IC, but run nitrous?

This is pretty much a drag only truck, how much would I lose by not having a IC on there?

Thanks

Kevin

You'll likely gain rather than lose.
If you can keep EGTs in check there's no real reason to run an IC on a drag only truck.

Thanks Rich,, that is what i was thinking, but I just wanted to get some opinions from the knowledgeable crew here

The only thing you'll lose is something that keeps the exploded compressor wheels out of the intake. I'm going air/water instead of nothing next season.

LOL,, I never thought of that,, but I guess that is racing,, LOL, not that I know anything about that

could you put bolts in like sledpullers do in the down pipe? it would help some

that only helps on the way out the exhaust,,, which reminds me,, I forgot to share what happened at my last race the same weekend I windowed my motor.. The first pass I had, kinda got caught by suprize, didnt get the tailgate off... so there i am just launching,, I hear a bang,, think, oh, just a little nitrous backfire (been playing with my controller quite a bit) nothing serious, keep the foot in it... anyways, back at the pit, someone comes over and says to me,, hey something blew out your exhaust and landed in your box,,, Im like what the hell? so I go and take a look,, here it was the exhaust side of the turbo I blew up last year... lol,, which really blows me away as we had that whole exhaust as good as off,,, cant figure out where it might have gotten caught up,,, that piece must have weighed a pound or two

im saying put bolts in the pipe going from the turbo to intake, or wled some expnaded metal in there. lol. that should help some to keep a pieces from going in the motor

It will make it a little harder to spool up too, though wont it? Thats what I've heard from some guys that have ditched IC's

I would think that it would be the opposite,,, but that thought comes with no actual experience.. Spooling isnt a problem though, I was spooling that gt4202 like nothing

going to bring this back up.

I ran non intercooled for a while. Im running an air to water cooler now.

non intercooled defiantly spools up better.

anyway, Im thinking of going back to non intercooled, but water/meth is a pain in the ass, as far as the nitrous, how much is needed to cool? I've had plans to run a small shot for quite a while now, to aid in spool up.

I was planning to run a 50 shot from 10-30psi if I just have it on always above 10psi is that going to be enough to cool, or would i need to add another 50 above 40psi or something?

I know on my truck, with the "over sped" small HE351, my truck really seems to fall on it's face the back half of the track. I suspect that my stock cooler gets heat soaked from the first 1/8th mile and allows much warmer air to enter the motor severely lessening HP at the end of the track.

Based off of that experience, I'd say that an cooler-less setup will make less power unless you spray enough nitrous to keep intake temps in a reasonable range 100-140*F.

I took a ride in JTaylor's truck with the same HE351 setup as mine and his truck noticeably pulled harder on the back half of the track. My only explanation is that his 03' has a better charge air cooler and doesn't get heat soaked as fast. My truck honestly pulls just as hard as his on the bottom end but he traps almost 9 mph faster than mine.

In my limited experience, intake air temp has a huge impact on HP, especially at the back half of the track.

I think it would be due to the less distance between the turbo and the motor... just my quick thought

It's a toss up, having a good intercooler will help the density and keep the charge cool, but running nitrous would also have the same affect.

Far as removing the ic all together will help on spool up, most people complain about the heater grid being restrictive and don't even think about the passing through the ic.

Depending on your setup, it would give you a nice increase and shouldn't hurt you on the back end at all.

*nx* I'd say the best way to decide would be to try it and see what worked best. But then again, who am I to say what you should do or not do. I just know that what works for some doesn't work for all.

ive ran without an intercooler, 66/71/14, shaved an easy 300 rpm off spool up time.

also, would hit 350+ deg IAT's with the water/meth off with only 1300* EGT's

so you need to actually watch IATs and not go off EGT's
