how to keep gears still?

Update on my tdc findings-

I put a screwdriver in the #1 injector hole. I had the engine pinned, so I dissengaged the pin and rolled the engine back and forth till I was happy that I was marking the ballancer at the point that the screwdriver started to move each way. I made a mark in the center of the two marks which should be true tdc and moved the engine till the pin engaged. The pin was 1/8 inch off counter clockwise from my tdc mark which I believe means that its 1.55* retarded from true tdc. Put differently, I have to turn the engine 1/8 inch counter clockwise to bring it from the pin tdc to true tdc.
