If you had to start all over for the 2.6 class... which would you choose, an auto or manual? My 03 is currently a NV5600 truck but I have a guy begging me to sell it too him. So I might be in the market for another truck to start over with. What I need to decide though is try to find an auto or another 6 speed?:bang Seems theres alot of guys changing to autos for 2.6 but I've always had faith in manuals so its a toss up here:poke: What do you guys think/ what are you running in 2.6?

an automatic is stronger than a manual and you can upshift AND downshift under load

Thats kind of what I was thinking... that could be a very good thing to keep on top of the charger. Plus these dang NV5600's are so expensive to work on...
And I forgot but this is on a 3rd gen either an 03 or an early 04 if that makes a difference.

If you think fixing a nv5600 is expensive just wait until an auto tears apart on you.

Ok lets put it this way.. I know they are both expensive. Been there done that, both will break too, been down that road also:doh: Guess I'm just looking for opinions of one or the other from people who have pulled with them. Thng is my common rail is a 6 speed, the auto I had was behind a 12 valve that didnt have the ponies my 03 has. Dont really want to start a war over it, just looking for what some of you with more on track experiance have to say.:Cheer:

Never pulled with a manual, but my georend auto is rock solid and hasnt let me down yet. Its nice not having the 3rd pedal to work, but i dont think id switch if i did it over.

If I had it to do over again I would have probably played a lil longer with just a tunner and a triple disc. But o well

Autos will always eventually break guarenteed. I have broke a billet input and a stock intermediate shaft so far and only have 500hp and dont sled pull.

Ive been pulling for 3 years and have over 150 hooks on the same transmission. All I have done is change the fluid and swapped converters to try different stall speeds. Im not saying that they wont fail, but most of the time a properly built auto will hold up for a long time. Im running all billet shafts and a billet flexplate.

Why do you say this....I've always thought the opposite. At least, I've always thought a manual put more HP to the ground than an auto. Do tell.

the more torque you run through a manual transmission, the harder the shafts try to push apart from eachother and the more power it robs...

If I had it to do over again, my pulling tractor would have never left. LOL Oh in all honesty I'd say to auto would shine in the 2.6 but when the power starts getting in the 900 and above I don't think your gonna beat a good slipper clutch and a stick. Especially someone that knows how to use that clutch

I am going to have to start over and am sticking with the manual. I just think through my experience that nothing beats a good 'ol NV4500 with a double or triple disk clutch. I have seen guys go through wads of cash when their expensive autos grenade and I had to spend the money once on a clutch and only the Amsoil fluid & bigger input for the NV4500. Yeah I didn't have near as many hooks but I had watched others run the same trans with the same great strength and reliability as I have. I just wish I had more money and time to play with R&P ratios vs gear selection vs RPM. Never was able to grab a 4th gear hook with the 3.54s.....:bang

Ok if your going to start over heres what i would do, not build a pullin truck, huge waste of money. But if you must, id by a 3rd gen and put a 5speed in it. We are a 2.6 truck and had an auto for two years and hated every minute of it. Now i put 5-speed in it and i love it. They are cheap to build easy to get.

True it is a waste of money. But you can say that pretty much everything is a waste of money except for food clothing and shelter. Also it seems like a lot of people manage to waste a lot more money than others, but still never have a very good runnin truck.

Its still a toss up for me. At the start of last year i would have never thought to put an auto in my truck but as the year went on i started to think auto after watching Wade and Swanson keep big chargers lit with there autos $.02

There are several high HP trucks that are very competitive in 2.8. Terry Coppess, Carl Sugg, Ric Scrimanger, Troy Wakeman, Terry Biggs, Dan Musselman, Scott Amos, Evan Smoot, and Taylor Stivers are just a few names that come to mind.

What kind of shafts are in yours? And who built it?
