so lets start from the top, ive got a 96 dodge cummins 12v that had a slipping trans (surprise surprise). eventually one day though I lost all forward gears and reverse. parked it and bought a dtt stage 2 overhaul kit and a new billet single converter. i wont name the converter company. so I take it to the shop put it all together and they call me to come pick it up, it has a very loud distinctive rattling/grinding noise that as far as i can tell only happens at random. the only constant is that its always at idle. it does it in reverse, drive, neutral, or park. also to add to it, i go to make a WOT pull and with the lock up switch engaged it completely unlocks, not slipping just feels like i lose complete connection between the trans and engine..any ideas gentlemen? im all ears

I broke the flex plate in my current truck and it made the most God awful noise like rocks in the oil pan. When I discovered slop in the flex plate I pulled the trans and found that the flex plate was in two separate pieces, but it fit together like a puzzle allowing the truck to move just fine under its own power

There are combinations of parts that do not play well together. You should have bought everything from one supplier or taken your truck to a shop that puts a good combo together and stands behind their work. One wrong bolt can fvck up a complete trans rebuild.

it was a pretty simple build, just a master overhaul kit and a torque converter. how could they not play well together unless something is defective...

It's also that simple to screw something up. Ask the rebuilder what is wrong with it. If they can't answer your questions they best not be rebuilding transmissions.

i guess your right. im also glad i havent mentioned the converter brand because had I done that it would be a bashing war lol

just thought id update, flexplate is cracked, stuck a screwdriver in there and immediately heard a click click click when putting next to no pressure on it

It still sucks, buts its probably the cheapest thing to make that much noise.

Easy now, mine happened right after I put my trans back in.. could have been a few factors, especially since the rest of my trans was no longer slipping

I base it on the fact that I picked the truck up and immediately noticed this sound, the soonest I could tell him was the next morning and he even agreed to noticing it as well. We will see today what he says
