Is a Silver 64 too BIG?

Hey guys, going to be upgrading to either a Silver 62 or 64 soon, with everything in my sig plus studs and an Arson CP3 kit from Wicked Diesels.

I've been reading that the 64 won't spool well with these small stix (25hp:hehe:), but I've heard people can make big power with a big turbo with even stock stix. I've asked over on the Cummins Forum, so thought I'd see what the consensus is on here. I'm at 800 ft elevation.

I don't tow with my truck...pretty much just a toy now, I have a daily driver. It's now a recreational track truck and a camaro killer on the street hopefully:evil. I still would like it to have low end punch as much as possible, and I wanna be able to strap to the dyno and make 600 hp.

My thought is the water meth in combination with the Smarty TNT and the ATS manifold will get the 64 moving pretty quick. Would like to have it lit by 2000 rpm if possible.

Any possibility of twins? If you think you might go that route then I would get the 62 and when, not if, you upgrade to bigger sticks you can add a S400 or so to it and be set. Awesome spool and more than enough air.

I got a buddy on here (Tlewiscummins) who runs a sps64 with stock sticks and I have never heard him complain about lag.

i dont think a 64 would hurt you at all .. 64s move a ton of air and with a little help from a quick spool manifold(which i see is already on your truck) they spool pretty darn quick which is great for a daily driver like mine.

I have found that a 64 will push more air than one thinks. I have tried a 62, 64,66,(68 modded unit). The best one hands down is the 64. Spools great for a larger charger.

I would definetly go with the 64. It ain't gonna spool lightning quick but it wont be too bad, and once it gets spooled you'll be glad you got it. It will also give you some growing room if you want to add some more fuel later on.

Yeah, I would like to have the option of upgrading to twins later. But my question is, who makes a kit that can upgrad the 62 to twins? I don't have the fortune of knowing alot of people in the diesel performance industry, and I've not been able to find a bolt on kit for upgrading one of these to twins. At least, nobody is advertising.

Thanks for confirming what my gut is telling me to do. I honestly thought a couple of months back I was completely sure of the silver 64, but then after reading on CF, I kinda was second guessing myself. People keep saying the word "lag" and kinda got me bummed out. But if I know me, I'll be wanting to upgrade that 62 if I go with that one.

Also, I've been told spool difference with that manifold is substantial, so my hope is the 64 will spool like the 62 with that mod. Also, I think it'd be hard to make 600 rwhp with that 62. I've seen guys that have done it though.

Like I said before, this truck is my TOY, and I don't ever tow anything other than a couple fourwheelers.

64s being laggy just becomes a joke once you add the exhaust manifold. I thought the same thing cause i drove around for a month or 2 w/o it and once i add it .. it was a diff. truck

does the manifold really help that much for 3rd gens? I guess it's because the ports are all gnarled up back there?

the 2nd gen manifolds never did anything for performance

When people talk about something being laggy, you need to look at what year truck it is on, and what their mods are.

I have a 66/16SS on top of a S480 on my 05, and it spools as well, if not better then, the 62/14 on top of a S400, that is on my 02. I daily drive both, and I live at over 4600'.

I would go with the 64.

64 by far, my 64/71/13ss from htt spools pretty quick with stock sticks, once lit it pulls hard all the way to 3600rpms, i have a nv5600 3:73's and 35" tires, but i think you'll be happy with the auto also.

:thankyou2: for the input paulb! You guys are getting me psyched up now. Shouldn't the meth injection help with spoolup too? I've heard it does anyway. Does anyone around here live in Kentucky that would be willing to take me for a ride in a truck with a 66 or 64 on it? I don't know any diesel heads around here.

So I'm taking it you have the TNT-R tune to get the extra rpms? To 3600.

Whooo hoooo, finally a thread thats giving the 64's much love!!!!:rockwoot:
Mine will be here next week and I cant wait!
:woohoo:

I spin a silver bullet 66 with stock sticks with zero problems. Daily driver and sometimes tow.

That gives me quite a bit of hope. It seems with an 04.5 - 07 CR, big turbos are not that big of an issue. Cummins done their homework.

I was also thinking of investing in one of those Wilson Thrasher intake manifolds to add some more lower rpm punch. Have you guys seen these, and I think they'd be a good help to anyone running a larger single.

There are a couple of companies out there that have one. I know that a lot of people use MPI and use a 62 over s400-488. I am pretty sure if you ask around you can find one that will work. BD Diesel has a kit upgrading to twins from a single 62. Just ask around and you should come up with a few options.
