So, there I was driving along, and the engine just quit. Luckily, I was just coming up to a downhill offramp. So, I coast down the ramp, pull over and take stock. The truck would start, run for 3-7 seconds and die.

Its minus 10 deg Celsius, so I send the wife and kids over to a nearby truck stop. Call the auto club and wait for the deck truck. I start it a couple more times, oil pressure is good, everything seems OK, just always idle and quit. Using the key I check for codes – NONE. I was starting to think that it just plain froze up, but that didn’t make sense. Eventually I get it to the dealership nearest to my house. They put it on diagnostics and tell me that the lift pump has gone south. Good news- its under warranty, bad news – ON BACKORDER AT LEAST THREE WEEKS.

Doing some searching on this site and few of the other diesel-porn sites that I monitor, I have noticed that there seems to be more than a little bit of discussion.

So, I will submit my questions to the drooling hordes- I mean “knowledgeable membership” and see if I can get a better understanding of what my situation is.

First – cough sputter wheez, then only start for a few seconds then quit again. Does everyone concur that this is a lift pump on the blink? It’s a simplistic description, but that’s what happened, I was pretty sure it was a fuel related issue. I really wish that the dimwit at the garage hadn’t messed up my fuel pressure gauge(I need to re-bleed it). If anyone can give a good description of a lift pump on the fritz, I would love to hear them.

Second – there have been many reference to a campaign (in the states) to change the “on the block” lift pump to an “in tank” one. I cannot find any references to this in any of my “official” Dodge propaganda websites. Request someone confirm or deny the presence of a pump in the tanks of 03 trucks. There are some correlation to 06’s, but I saw one thread say 03, so I though I would ask.

Third – (Wyatt- standing by for a great big, fat, TOLD YOU SO). Does FASS act as a replacement lift pump? I am thinking of harassing the dealer to get him to install one in place of the stock equipment. I want to push this angle in order to get my truck on the road in a reasonable amount of time. I expect to have a fight on my hands with that, but, sitting here unable to drive, what else can I do but start a 1–800 battle with customer service.

So, in all, the next 3-4 weeks of my life will be hell, DC will only front up a courtesy car for 5 days – part of the reason I will be having a significant conversation with the 1-800 customer service wanks- significant truck withdrawal issues.

I hope everyone has a better start to their new year than mine.

Looking forward to responses.

Sounds like you have indeed lost the lift pump, if the motor gets no fuel, it no run and the CP3 cannot pull fuel from the tank by itself IIRC.

On the FASS, one word, yes.

Best of luck with DC and the dealer, start talking "You can keep this POS right here as long as you want, the Ford dealer will pick it up" and other such nonsense. I haven't heard of them replacing with nonfactory parts so good luck.

S, I actually got the truck back fairly quick. Especially after the dealership started shelling out the $$ for the rental from enterprise that they were footing the bill for.

It turns out there were a few on order for this area, and I got the first one to show up.

Have run about a tank of fuel through it so far, and have found that I have slightly better fuel economy all of the sudden (extra 1 mpg).

I have been researching all the different lift pump style products out there, and have found a number of aux pumps that are meant to complement the stock lift pump, but it seems only FASS is the outright full system replacement product.

Anyone have experience with Glacier products? or the BD aux pump kit?

The Big Kid,

FASS makes a replacement pump and then they also make a full fuel system that eliminates the entrapped air in the fuel. The cost difference is usually 190-225.00 between the two systems and in my opinion the full system is the way to go!! Plus it has a 3 micron fuel filter and water seperator filter as a safety feature too! You get the best pump, no air in the fuel, and super filtration all on one package. If you have any questions on them let me know.

Mark @ DPPI

I just had the lift pump go out of my 03 and instead of waiting the 2 more hours to get it put in left the dealership with a 06 instead!

dead lift can = a dead CP3 on a Dodge. If you want the dealer to pay...You might want to see if they will install the "in-tank" pump, they last MUCH longer. I think there is a TBS or something on it.

On the other hand, a FASS system is 100x's better than what you have and will last a very long time. Give Mark @ DPPI a call and see what he can do. He helped me with a few things and is pleasure to deal with. $.02

The dealer i was at said they had completely got rid of the lift pumps they had on the '03s and only replace them with intank lift pumps, is it that why around u guys? I dont to worry bout it anymore i have an intank lift pump because i have an 06 now.
