Trucks been running again for a few weeks and so far I like it! I like it a lot!
Running crazy strong. Sounds different even.
Running 04.5 injectors, I'm going to run this by Don before next season and see what he thinks would be best for them, but so far they seem to work pretty well.

Here's some photos's for a refresher again.
And a thanks to John Robinson, for some phone time and the discussion on what he thought of them in his funny car.

(The black on the piston pin is DLC coating.)

(Very little drag from the smaller skirt)

(The new angle of the j-jet lets it spray the cooling gallery of the piston, and also the underside of the skirt and piston pin)

(Drilled the piston and changed the location of the j-jet piston cooling nozzle)
This took some engineering, 1/2 stroke sprays the underside of the skirt and piston pin, the other half stroke sprays through the hole and into the cooling gallery)

(relocated oil cooling hole) originally the location to the oil cooling gallery was to the side of the piston, and I felt that wasn't the best location considering the underside of the skirt and pin wouldn't get any direct spray from the j-jet.

(Tig welded the gallery cover in the new position)

Its part of the design of the monotherm, the pin is quite a bit shorter.

So the wrist pins come DLC coated or did you have them sent out?

Those pieces sure are nice, I would have to say that is probably the ultimate in strength and durability for high power daily driver or even a strictly competition truck only. I know what I'm savin' for the next engine build.

Couple of questions, the "gallery cover" you speak of, is it removable? Is it similiar to the stock pistons as it has 1 hole for the oil to enter in to and 2 holes for oil exit? Do these pistons have any steel inserts on the ring lands? If there are no steel ring lands will these last driving on the street?

The entire piston is steel. They are the absolute on durability. Its too bad the market cant support these right now. Eric @ Mahle is a good guy and has been helpful more than many know.

Yeah like Don said, the whole piston is steel. One hole in for oil and one out.

Their not meant to be removed and its a tricky process to do it, they spring snap into place. They are indexed so they don't turn, so when I wanted to turn them i just ground of the index and then tig'ed spot welded them in place.

Is the price on the mono therms under 3k yet?

I doubt it, I got a bit of a deal on these since they are still kinda in the testing/prototype stage.

Eric didn't think even if they went into full production they would be much cheaper, fairly involved process.

So far though, the results have been outstanding.

Break in pretty much done, but seeding is in gear now so won't be much play time for a month or two.

Looks bada**!!! They should hold up nice. How much of a weight diff. are they just curious?

We just tore the motor down for the 2nd time in 2 years.......This time for maintainence. That was the same rings we started with last year. Everything still looked good. I think there are a few folks around here lying about their egt`s.........Or they dont know how to mread their data logger.

I wouldn't be surprised these pistons would last a few blocks depending on how hard you are on them....(the block I mean)

John Did you use that ring pack that Eric suggested for the monotherms, I was surprised at how wide the gaps were. I'm pretty sure we could get away with less.

Egt's .......:hehe: don't really watch anymore.

Aren't some engines running monotherms stock? ISX's?

Couldn't be that inherently expensive of a process if the OEM's are doing it?

Yeah, a lot of the bigger diesels are running monotherms, maybe all of them now. Cummins and Cat for sure are on various engines.

You need to think like the bean counters at Chrysler, throw another 10% on a engine for monotherms and they're baulking. Just look at some of the corners they will cut.

True on both counts. The rings do have somewhat of a gap. Till I see a prob. I`m not going to fret about it.
As for egt`s..................You can get by with murder, As long as your exhaust valves are good to go..
