Making a 1ton rearend live?

Anybody have any advice on how to make them live? I should be able to start on mine come spring and just trying to gather info. Are the 5500 series and 550 series trucks still classified as a 1ton? I need to start gathering parts at some point for mine so would be nice to know. What do you think Dale and Lynn? Oh and hear is a pic of the project.

That chevy likely has a D70 or 14 bolt.

The 14 may hold it.... for a little while.

try to find an 80 or a 11.5 AAM from a dodge, get a full billet steel spool and the biggest axles you can get for it. Also don't scrap on the grears. You get what you payfor.
 
10.5 14bt s 1.75/30 axle stock with pinon support
AAM1150 a 2.005/30 axle with no pinon suport.
D80 2.0/37 spline and no pinion support.

also if you can find soem eatton HO72 or HO110 i know they have pinoon and ring support

some one on pirate 4x4 was able to graft 2.5ton axle shaft inside a 10.5 carrier..

IMO i would runt he 10.5 14b and upgrade axle shafts... due to the pinnion support...

and the crush sleave that is in the 14b... you can repalce it with a machined spacer
 
Mine has the 70 under it so I know its not going to live. I'm debating on the 80 or AAM. I'm going to wait a while and try to find a donor truck. Working on purchasing a house now and I just couldnt pass this truck up its to clean. Really want to run a D-Max/6 speed in it but we will see. I'd also like to still drive it on the street some but I know if I run a spool that wont be happening. Does anyone think an ARB or Detroit would hold up?

I've been busy with work and the holidays Dale. Little free time I have I've been either working on my junk or spending time with my daughter.

I don't see how your gonna get 2" axles in a d80 unless you completely redo the spindles.

i got a detroit in my 75 K20 (14bt)... out side of increased tire wear... its fine..

it does pop and bang, squell, and chrip around shrape turns... other then that is fine.

if it main is a puller go full spool and forget about it
 
From what I've seen the 11.5 AAM from a Dodge is about the strongest I've seen. I very rarely hear of one breaking except for the GM AAM's, but a fellow puller that runs a D-max was telling me he looked at his rearend and his sons Mega Cab rearend and he said he believes the axle tubes on the GM version are smaller. That would explain why the GM versions seem to break more axles because of axle tube flex. Just my $.02
 
That would make sense with the GM AAM. Just going to have to start saving for some parts I guess.

I beat the crap out of my GM AAM with no issues when I owned the truck anyway. I have seen 80's grenade a ton of times but I am still a firm believer in them because of what you can do to upgrade them.

Now....I honestly don't see why a properly built 14-bolt won't hold up. I have seen the gasser trucks running them for years and although they don't have quite the torque we have the stress is still there and I have seen them hold up where a D70 or 80 won't. The pinion bearing is what keeps them going I believe and if someone can get a spool made up for larger shafts and the finer spline count I think it would be totally bullet proof.

Thats the problem. Parts are limited for the 14bolt.
 
The green stuff...lol I have got a good set of gears in mine and a full spool. Still gotta get a good set of axels. Right now Im trying to make my mind up if im going open driveline or not. If I do my 80 will be up for sale.

thats the problem though, the Dana 80's are experianceing the exact problem right now that the 14-bolt will fix and thats keeping the pinion up against the ring gear. I believe that axle shaft diameter on the 14bolts are equal to that of the AAM's but just a courser spline count. The Ring gear is also a little smaller but I have yet to see the carnage to the gears like you do in the 80's and this is probably because of that 3rd bearing keeping everything true.


Have you considered going to a F106? you can get 8x6.5" hubs for them now and you could easily adapt a disk brake kit to one from one of the 14-bolt conversion kits. Just a thought as you can get down to a 5:29 gear ratio...might still be a bit high tough for you..Proformance Pros Online Store

No classes around hear will let you run anything except OEM driveline. Hoping to see that change though before I'm ready to start working on the rear. Love to stick a F106 in it.
