I knew it was going to cost me a little extra money this time when I pulled out my injectors and found that #3 had lost its tip.

So I finally got the head off tonight and found the tip.

That would have been bad enough but # 4 -6 are burnt and have spray patterns out of the bowl. (That weren't there when I replaced the HG a week prior to this incident) #1-3 look pretty good.

I also have a lot of junk in my cooling passages. For a second I thought that maybe the debris had blocked some coolant flow to the back cyclinders but that wouldn't explain the patterns on the pistons. After a re-torque I had a boot blow off two times, not sure if that could have done anything either.

Thoughts?

Junk in the cooling system. I was running Evans Coolant.

Is it me...but it looks like you've got 5-hole nozzles??

Who's are they?

You need to grab a magnifying glass and count the holes to verify...but by the looks of the pistons...you've got 04.5+ 5-hole 124* injectors in your 03 8-hole designed 143* angle pistons.

Which will lead to damage quickly...blowing the tip off may be the best thing that could have happened.

I'm pretty sure the Flux nozzles are 5 hole even for 03. they have been in my truck for just about 20k miles. The marks were not on the pistons when I had the head off one week prior to this happening.

Incorrect...all 03/04's require either 7 or 8 hole nozzles ( don't remember which)....ONLY the HO motors up to the 6.7 use the 5-hole design.

So if they are 5-hole nozzles...I'd be calling Don.

Most Flux 03-04 nozzles are made from new blanks and I have 5 hole 03-04 flux's. Do you have a marking of 555 on your nozzle body? It would be hard to get a 124 degree pattern so far out of the piston bowl. The 124 degree usually blows holes or melts starting from the center of the piston out. The 555 marking would help identify what you have.

Damn Jason, sorry to see that!

Don's 03/04 nozzles are 5 hole when he builds them with new blanks, I've got 100k+ miles on his 5-hole tips in my 03.

Its true, his are special. Looks like the nozzles are either greater than 143* or you are running too much timing.

Thanks guys. I figured I didn't have the wrong nozzles. My truck ran too good for too long for that. I didn't change anything except for putting a coolant by pass on the engine.

I have no clue why the change in timing.

The truck ran fine without the mp8. It blew a boot twice when I turned it up then the tip went when it was turned up.
