I have a friend with an 04.5 with a Dragonfire CP3, DDP 90's, Smarty, Banks intercooler, Silver 64, fass150, and banks billet converter...And he is about to rip off all the mods and put it back to stock parts unless he can figure out why his truck wont out run a stock VP cummins. Can anyone shed some light on potential problems hes having? things went from bad to worse with this truck and i'm really feelin for the guy now. How good can a Banks Torque converter hold up to this kind of power? I've been telling him that he needed to invest in a front to back billet transmission like Goerend or DTT for all the stuff hes got bolted on his engine.

Heres the history on his truck,

Bully dog was good then switched to a complete banks system:badidea:. and it was terrible, (go figure) pulled off banks electronics and switched to a smarty and the smarty he said was less impressive than the banks. Then he took it to a local shop for help and they bolted up a silver 64, and all it does now is smoke like a sled puller and wont move off the line no faster than an electric wheelchair.

Advice, tips, suggestions post them.

his problems are def. tranny...i have an 07 mega cab dually and dont have all those fun bolt on goodies, but bully dog with crazy larry in 7000 miles smoked the stock trans...literally melted parts together. once clutches start to slip theres no turning back. i now have Garmons Diesel billet triple disc converter and his custom valvebody...from just my own experience and sounds like he can afford it, def. drop the trans and have it built with upgraded clutches and billet pieces. my advice is to call garmons and he'll set him up. im truly amazed the truck even moves!!!!! let us know how it turns out! good luck

That's pretty much the same setup I'm running and I know no stock VP is keeping up wit me.. Has he had it on the Dyno for some tuning?? How's his rail pressure?? Tranny could be the problem if it's not fully built it def ain't gonna putting the power to the ground.. It could possible have a bad ECM from going back and forth from so many different programmers.. I'd maybe start at getting the ECM reflashed and see if that changes anything... Shawn

good point. smokin5.9. on the rail pressure too......how do you like your sticks/silver 64 set up? im debating between a charger like yours or twins....trying to let my wallet catch up from all the money i gave jeff garmon lol

Check out boost leaks too, if he is only seeing 10psi of boost because the rest is bleeding out its going to smoke badly and be slow.

Does the engine sound like it is running correctly? No wierd noises or knocks? Can you lash the valves to make sure they are not way out of whack?

the truck smokes at cruising speeds just trying to get down the road with hardly any load on it im pretty sure the tranny is not holding the power. Rail pressure was around 22000 and the valves were good.

yeah...im pointin my one time replacement tranny from chrysler at it!!! lol i should get a prize though...7k miles!!!!!(from brand new) whoops...

mine seemed to rev alot and really flare when it shifted....does the trans fluid smell burnt? is it "metallicy??" but if u say the truck really sounds like its laboring just to move itself, then thats 100% exactly what i had...get that thing out now before the whole thing is shot!!!!!!

A beefed up converter with no upgraded valve body, asking for trouble in my book. I can tell you now with all the other mods and no valve body he's smoked the clutches. Pull the dip stick and smell the fluid, I'd bet money it's burnt. Like KTM said, give Jeff Garmon a call, he'll get your friend setup with all the right stuff..Good luck....ROB

i mentioned wanting twins, but i wont pay 5k for them! i do believe we have his no power thing narrowed to the trans.....im not runnin sticks yet or bigger charger...but once i spool i light 4 rear tires on a very large truck...if its chuggin smoke it would seem to have fuel. smokin5,9l made over 600 hp with this same basic setup....dodge would never replace my vb when i had issues with this truck when it was stock and new, it cost them a brand new tranny & tc. in only 7k miles...i hope he gets this thing out and checked before he ends up like i did. good luck man

I agree!! I'd tell him to check all the IC boots or if you can peform a pressure test.. I tested my system and found I had been driving around for almost a year wit a blown intake manifold gasket.. $12 gasket fixed that problem..

I made some irrelevant posts disappear.
Keep the thread on topic. You wanna talk twins, make a thread of your own or PM that chit. Don't do it in a tech thread where someone is asking for help.

When it comes off the line, does the tach flare?

What boost is he seeing? Can he make any at all if he brake torques it? Where does the tach stop if he tries that?

As asked before, what does the oil look like? Does it smell like fuel?

Who did the sticks?

His trans as it is will make certain he gets his ass handed to him regularly. Usually when you lunch one you slip, not bog. I don't get how he's "smoking like a puller" if he's not able to load the engine due to a chitty trans. Semi-free revving CR's with 50 horse sticks installed correctly won't "smoke like a puller." A leaking rail valve crapin' the bed may cause a bit of smoke.

He needs to find another wrench, IMO. Anyone who throws a turbo at a truck because the customer wants to be Ricky Bobby without doing more for trans work than a converter doesn't sound right.

A broken stator in the converter could make it a total pig out of the hole but should still come to life once rolling. If it smokes nonstop and makes no power it has to be boost leak, exhaust leak, low rail pressure or really messed up injs. Find a decent shop that knows what they are doin.

If he foot brakes it, how high will it rev before the converter stalls out? Im just thinking that the converter is bad or has a crazy low stall.

Agreed he needs at least a good valve body.

I think it has to be a leak, most likely in the charged air pathway. If it is leaking out a bunch of boost the engine will not be breathing like it needs to.

I agree with Amish in the fact a fubar'd tranny would slip and just rev for the most part, just like a slipping clutch. His tranny is hurt I am sure but it is not the sole cause of your friends problems IMO.

I found an exhaust leak on my engine when I pulled it that I must have had the whole time I have had my turbo so I am sure it had an adverse effect on my spoolup, EGT's and attainable boost.

Heres a pic of the Pressure Tester that i made...

It sounds to me like the converter may have a stall that is too low for that silver 64. But, once its rolling, it should have plenty of power. He may need a transmission, but a transmission will have nothing to do with the truck smoking at cruising speed. And if the transmission is worn out or slipping, it will rev fast and wont pull hard at all. It shouldnt lug. I think he has boost leaks, and possibly too large of a turbo. I would start with the boost leaks, see how the transmission takes it after that, and then go from there.

dont forget a stuck open waste gate, just because its a new turbo dosent mean it cant have a bad waste gate. or a cracked exhaust manifold. it sounds like its either air not coming in or air poorly comeing out.....
