Never heard of a sterling holding up very good to any real pulling. Pulling is a whole different ball game from mud running. Its a lot of fun, but expensive.
If you are just getting started, you might want to look at the work stock class. You will still need 400-500hp or so to be real competitive, and the driveline will hold together much better than a 2.6 class truck. Not to mention it will still take a good bit of work and money to get going and do any good.
A 7.3 Powerstroke can probably make 350-400hp on a stock turbo with the right setup(although im not exactly sure how much has been made). That would get you started in the work stock class, and you would still have some work ahead of you to get to the top of the class.
