I'll assume most are no longer running transmissions (like the nv4500, autos, etc.) but rather bellhousings and clutches with reversers and quick change transfer cases.

So, what are some of the options for the guys running the open drivelines - 3.0/unlimited singles and the mods? What clutch cans/bellhousings are available for the Powerstroke/Duramax/Cummins? What brands of clutches available? What's the typical cost of a can and clutch setup for one of these?

Just curious.

You can check out Haisleys website. They have the blow proof housings available through them as well as the clutches. You can run a 4 or 3 discs from just about anywhere. Getting the spacing for the clutch fork will be what you need to address. I have a NV4500 bellhousing thats machined down and will accept the reverser. Then I am able to keep the stock starter and slave cylinder. Unsure where to get them from as it was part of the truck when I bought it.

Matt,
Both of these have made 3-4 disc pulling clutches for the Duramax. Will hold all the power you can throw at it.

Molinari Racing Products (619) 628-0109
Kenny's pulling parts (606) 379-7490

You can buy a bellhousing for a Duramax here:

Probell Racing Products (877) 430-6634
Browell Bellhousing (765) 447-2292

question for the duramax guys that have done this....Does a Duramax have the same bolt patern as the typical chevy patern??? so you could run any chevy block plate and belhousing without major mods? just curious because I thought that some Dmax's in the vans ran a 4L80e instead of an allison and thats the normal patern.

Ryan

Thanks Roger! Which of those are you going to be running? Gonna finally get it out there in 2010?!?! :rockwoot:

Ryan, yeah, same bolt pattern on the DMax as a normal GM block. ;)

Okay, for the record...you Dmax guys are f%^$in lucky!!!!!!! what I would give to be able to bolt up any mid plate to a block and run any belhousing and clutch!!!!!! Suprised you don't see Lenco's behind all the dmax drag trucks*nx*

probell and browell do bells for fords too, and also wipe out has one for a nv4500 behind a ford. clutches crower, hmr, sbc all make them

Is Browell's clutch can similar in price to the Probell mentioned earlier?

I understand the bolt pattern is typ. GM but would a bell for a say BBC work or are the one's for the diesels bigger in order to maybe harness larger clutches? Or could a guy get a clutch can from a retired SMFD gasser guy with his 3-4 disc clutch and go at it?

A can from a blown gasser would work as long as the can depth is correct for you clutch configuration....

there all the same, probell is just driving distance for me

yeah, I noticed the cans come in varying depths... what depth would one need to be for a 3 or 4 disk clutch? I also notice that one of them had bells specific for the diesels that were, I take it, larger in diam. - like 12 1/2 IIRC whereas some of the gasser ones are for 10" clutches IIRC.

What's with that? I was thinking the typical clutches were like over 13" in the diesels??

Also, what other parts are needed with the can?

Does a reverser have a shaft out the front and into the clutch - a la input shaft or what is used for the shaft through the clutch?

Can a dual or triple disc clutch typically found behind a Cummins in an NV4500, be used in an application with a just a bellhousing and only a reverser?

Sorry for all the newb questions. Just never really been around the high-class trucks and no next to nothing about them yet we all love them so much because they're BA! I just like to know the details of things. :D

TIA

The clutches that everyone is running in the mod class and the 3.0 class if running a blow proof can are probably going to be around a 10.5-11" clutch or so I have heard. Thats the major reason most are jumping up to a 4 disk because you can get close to the same surface area as with a large 3 disk clutch.

It would be great if you could get a standard High Perf Cummins pulling clutch into a blow prof can but it just won't work.

Others have stated about using the NV4500 belhousing with a reverser behind it...that works too but honestly, if you going that far you may as well run a blow proof can....your feet will think you!!!!!!!!

Here is another question...anyone know what the crank shaft/flywheel bolt patern is on the Cummins compared to all the other standard engines out there, Chevy, Chrysler, HEMI or Ford?

where does one go to get one of these different flywheels for a Dmax that will allow for the use of a blowproof can and clutch setup, chris? Still uses a reg. dmax starter and ring?

details man, need more details. :D
