P-pump idling high?

Ok well now that my p-pump runs, I have a small issue...it wants to idle at 1200rpms. I also think that its not the low idle control screw needing adjustment either.

The pump is CDS built with 5ks, and full cuts and a gutted AFC. I have .084 lines on it, .093 crossover tubes and I am running my DDP comps set for the vp44. I am in the process of trying to get some custom sticks made, but for now they work to get it running (and a member on here reported that his DDP's worked better set for the VP than when he had them set for the p-pump).

Anyway could the higher pop-off of the injector cause the idle to raise? anything else to check, or could it just need to have the idle screw adjusted to bring it down to about 900.

Adjust the idle screw (VERY TOUCHY) TJ or unclick the springs 1 click.

id test the idle screw first. After all, it takes 5 minutes. If that doesnt work, which it probably will, then look into the gov springs.

Agree.... I change injector on my puller and its close to your setup and I never changed my pop pressure. Pulled out of a VP truck and put them it a p-pump 24 valve!!! No idle changes!!! I have Scheid 5K springs and they arent touchy at all....

It's not like I have ran this exact pump before :evil.

I forgot to add that when I started it tonight...at first it was idling great at 800...but i bumpe the pedal and gave it a quick burp...it revved to about 1800 and then settle back in at 1200 and did not drop from there. it did this on the inital start-up too where it idled low for a few moments but slowly climbed to 1200 without revving it.

Try your idle but if it hangs that is always too tight.

This may sound dumb but I would install a super strong idle return spring. I had a similar issue a few years ago and all it was was the spring not being strong enough to bring the throttle linkage all the way back to the idle position.

Just a thought!

nope, we pushed the linkage back by hand and it didnt change, so its not the springs

tj i think brandon sold you a bad pump you should go on every forum and bad mouth him.

JUST KIDDING:hehe::hehe::hehe:
unclick your gov. springs erics idled high also when we installed his

Just since I saw this...it's shouldn't screw with the idle at all...but, higher pop pressures will screw with your timing. I would try and verify with a diesel timing light if you don't end up getting different sticks.

I was blaming the pump too. Maybe it is your geographic location?

it will retard the timing a hair (its set at 23)...but why would that raise the idle?

how hard is it to back the gov springs off a click?

Big hex plug on the D side of pump remove, take 1 click out of both sets of springs, reinstall plug Enjoy.

TJ, does that thing haze like crazy at idle?? Mine does after my conversion. I think I need smaller sticks, I'm running Mach 6's converted. I have the opposite problem you have with my CDS pump and 5k's. When I first start it the truck idles fine. After I drive it a while it wants to stall at traffic lights when in gear. In park it idles at about 800.
