painting block

1500* engine paint (hemi orange). I used masking tape and a hammer (firmly pressing down and pulling off) to remove excess tape. ( like "rubbing off")

The spray can stuff is ok, but it doesn't hold up nearly as well as epoxy primer/base clear.

Powder coating sounds like an awful idea, heating a block to 400*......

Clean the block with a degreaser, (not brake cleaner), acrylic based solvent works well. Any paint system will work, I prefer an enamel based spray paint. Shops like tractor supply, co-op, ect, all have a selection of paints. Look on the cans and it will tell you if its lacquer or enamel.

I have seen alot of powercoated blocks and the heat didint bother them at all...idk bout your truck but my head has seen 1600 degress F or more alot of times and it didnt bother my head so i dont think it will bother the block.

So you guys think that using the spray can stuff is good. Or would it be worth using a spray gun.

i use the duplicolor engine enamel its good to 500 degrees ive never had problems with it and i always use the same stuff as a clear coat too. i painted my cummins block silver, mainly for one reason. try finding an oil leak on a dark colored engine, and try finding one on silver. i can point out where an oil leak is from a mile away if i want to. not to mention it looks pretty sharp with black accents as well. as for not hearing of the vht paint, its another spray can paint durable to 2000*F. vht stands for very hot temp iirc

that dupli color is what i got i painted my intake manifold with it and it looked good. but i could use a clear coat. that's a good idea about oil leaks
