Ok so the motor is torn down to the gear case

Only timing mark on any gear I can find is the one on the cam gear that also coincides with the timing pin.

Lots of various numbers and letters but nothing that looks like a timing mark.

Keyway on the crank appears to be striaght up when the timing pin is in place, but that is rather a wide reference for a timing mark.

So how does one set up the gears when removing the cam etc so they are in proper time with the crank.

Or is it like i have to punch some marks in the various gears before i remove the cam gear etc so I know the proper reference for reasemmbly?

I have a new fluidampr and also plan to do the timing check with the wire pointer and stop, etc, for top dead centre, to verify exact TDC, and also so I can degree in the cam if necessary.

Any one got info on timing marks?

thanx
Ken

There should be a 0 on the crank gear that lines up between two 00 on the cam gear when #1 is at TDC. What cam are you installing?

it should be an 0 on the crank gear and an 00 on the cam gear it should also be the same on the pump gear an 00 on the cam gear and an 0 on the pump gear so you have to be careful you could end up 180 degrees out of timing.

found the zeros on the crank and cam gear - thanx

no marks on the pump gear near what I think would be the timing mark area - being inline with the timing pin mark

pump gear markings are as follows

FBA - 7 oclock
01 - 4 oclock
39149212 - 3 oclock
backwards K 003 - 9 oclock
D EC - 1:07 oclock

keyway straight up

There is nothing to indicate on the pump gear that the numbers n letters are timing marks unless the FBA, which is almost at the timing pin marker, is the intended timing marks, and the "B" in FBA is the intended timing mark?/

considering i got this motor from a guy who put a pump on this and never got it running again - its possible the pump gear is not in time so it could be the FBA letters???

thoughts?
thanx

well my VE pump is keyed to the gear - so it has to be timed to the cam gear or it would never run properly if at all

So what your sayin is place the IP on the three mounting studs, centre the IP in the slots of the IP mounting boss, then fit the gear to the pump, and tighten everything down, then release the stop bolt on the IP?

Those letters are pump timing marks. You need to knew your CPL number and this way you can indentify wich letter you should use.
Besically in old VE you can use 3 different fuel pumps (same pump gear): bosch VE, CAD and Denso.

HMMM

if the keyway is to be straight up - there isnt a single letter that coincides with the timing pin mark on the cam gear

If i line up the B in FBA the keyway would be at 11:00 oclock

can't be both

Yes it is a VE and it is a Bosch pump

I have Cummins repair manual in my work, I can copy few pages if you need

No - cam 00 is 180 degrees from the timing pin mark and about and inch or better from the FBA if the keyway is at 12 oclock

I was thinking wrong been awhile since I time a VE. keyway does not matter. If you have the crank and cam makes lined up and engine pinned. Is there a o on the cam gear for the fuel pump gear? F or E I think sould line up with the o. There should also be a hash mark on the fuel pump if you take the pump gear off where the keyway sould line up with.

CAM GEAR HAS THE TWO "00" ON IT AND 180 DEGREES APART IS LIKE A LITTLE ARROW WHICH IS ALSO EXACTLY WHERE THE TIMING PIN HOLE IS

the two 00 line up wit hthe crank gear 0

ONLY MARKS ON THE PUMP GEAR ARE THE ONES I LISTED

oops caps - sorry
