Picking a Turbo

I'm going to list the mods and I'd like to hear what you guys think I should run for a turbo. I already do have a 62/12, but I'm not certain it's the right size. I haven't been able to test the truck much since I got it running and then ripped the rear axle out (D80 swap).

Truck is used for daily driving, towing and a bit of playing.

98 24v auto trans

Mach 4 injectors
TST CE
Smarty Revo
free flow intake/exhaust

I don't plan on towing with anything set to "kill"... If I have to I can run just injectors...

Well with those 150hp injectors that 62/12 is going to get hot. How heavy do you tow? If it's pretty heavy I'd look for a 14cm housing. Heck you'll probably need one anyways just to help keep things from getting way to warm with those Mach 4s.

How big is your exhaut wheel? I'm guessing a 65mm??

With my 64-71/14 I wont tow anything too heavy because EGTs will get pretty high when going up hills.

Also you've upgraded your tranny, right?

The larger turbine housings your gonna have to run a little more RPM to keep things cool.
A 62/12 will get a little toasty, I ran a 62/12 with 130HP injectors and my comp on 1x1 or off, and with 285 tires, 3.54 rear, you had to use 5th gear(6 speed truck) towing anthing over 9,000 lbs if your rpm dropped below 2000. Granted it would haul the mail going up the hills as fast as you want.

Yeah it's a 65mm.

When I'm loaded down I have about 10,000lbs of stuff between the trailer and what's in the bed of the truck, so nothing super heavy.

With the bit of driving I did, I cruise at around 900* with the TST on 6 and no smart.

Before this setup, I would cruise at 600-700 and 900* loaded down.

Yes I have a built up trans. Convertor is supposed to be good to 600hp and other than the stock intermediate and output shafts, the rest is more or less bulletproof.

Didn't say that I didn't like it, but seems to be hotter than I like, so I was wondering if I should have picked something different?

I haven't been able to test the truck much since I got it running and then ripped the rear axle out (D80 swap). I just did 2 or 3 trips to work and back (30 miles) and that's it.

I can upgrade the housings for like $300... could do a 64/12 or something... dunno.

I have a 14cm housing I would trade ya. Off of an HTBG 65mm turbine wheel.

Why not put a s400 under that guy, it should make a pretty good towing twin setup. Maybe spraying some water/no meth.

i love my HTT 62/71/13ss. it spools like my stocker and stays cool on top.

i have m4's also and just a smarty. i have a tst ce, but im waiting for tranny upgrades before installing it.

i was going to get the 65mm wheel, but everyone i talked said how they like the 71 so much.

That's my combo minus a few goodies. I think you'll like it =)

Wonder if I could just change the exhaust housing and wheel for to make it a 62/71/13?

As for the twins... that isn't going to happen at this point. Don't have the time or money.

Look if it is just a little to hot get an intercooler upgrade it drops egt's like no other and it will fix all your problem, On a truck I put it on it was at least a 250 on the egt drop. Lol and if you don't like it sell me the intercooler for a sceemin deal lol hope this helps. I know it is a little more cash but alot of people don't understand how much it really helps.

What year truck and what where the mods?

If I were you, I'd run that 62/12 and leave the rest of the setup alone. You're not going to gain anything by upgrading as far as towing is concerned unless you move up to twin turbos. Quick spool is key to a fun street setup and good towing performance, you have that with the 62/12.

A new intercooler will net you 20* cooler egt's than a clean stock charge air cooler when towing. Now if you upgraded from a leaky dirty stock intercooler, I could see 200*, but you're not going to see it if your stock cooler is clean and leak free.

Don't bother with the intercooler unless you find a wicked deal on one.

I've see very little difference between the stocker and spearco intercooler (cruising egt's) the only reason I got it was because the stocker was on backorder and the insurance company was willing to pay the $865 it cost at the dealer.
If I was to of have removed a perfectly fine intercooler just to upgrade to a aftermarket IC, then I really would of been %&#*#$ because the performance gains are not worth the extra coins you have to spend on one of these.

The post about the size isn't going to help for towing other than doing twins...

Can you explain that a little more, why it wouldn't change the temps?

I was thinking the larger the wheels are, the more air it flows which would mean cooler EGTs? Is that right?

I did talk to Rip a bunch and he feels that 62/12 or 62/14 is pretty much what I need.

As for lag, the 62/12 seriously has almost zero. Really I think it is better than stock.

My big thing is I don't want to constantly be worrying about EGTs while towing.

What is your elevation, that plays a role.. I think a water/meth kit would get rid of any egt worries you might have
