Guys
Been having an issue with my ol 12v that I cant seem to figure out.
Usually the truck runs great, but its starting to get the the point that when it gets under a hard strain that it starts popping and just feels like its loosing power. It normally does this at the far end of the pulling track when its really starting to work. It also wants to spit out a little fire ball or two at the end of the hook. My timing is set at 26 deg. I haven't changed it since I went to these smaller injectors. (10x18s to 5x18s) My egts are around 1400-1600.
It just seems like it only does this when its trying to load the gov. I dont know if my pump may be taking a dump or if something else is out of whack.

I have noticed some other trucks do it but mine is much more pronounced.
Here is a vid. Im at the 24 sec mark or so. YouTube - hart 2 8 Sometimes it does this worse and sometimes not at all.
What would yalll think it might be?

Im all ears.

Thanks
Lynn

to me it seems like you have the timing and the fuel for high rpm.
But, as the rpm falls and you continue to stay on top of the turbo it seems as though the fuel isn't burning right at that low rpm high load scenario.. What kind of fuel are you running? What kind of piston bowl?

Well I have a fuel pressure gauge that I am going to put on this week.
Also I am running just plain ol #2 diesel. What additives would yall put in there with it?
As for the pistons they are a malhe replacement that have been decked 120 thous. I know not the best thing to have done but I was in a pinch at the time.

Well i like a little bit of power service (in the gray bottle).. We're going to be experimenting with some new fuel from Europe soon, so we'll see how that goes.. Whose injectors? do you know the spray angle and pop pressure?

Ah they came from a local shop, dont know what the pop pressure is. I know that I have to be spraying out of the bowl bc of the way my pistons are cut. What would yall advise that I do? Bump my timing up a few degrees? Down?
It just seems like it goes nuts when it does this.

What pistons and what injector? I'd start at the supply and go to the pump, then from injectors and go to the pump, making it my last target.

The supply pump is a FASS 150 or 200 (pump ony), 13mm I.I. injection pump, 5x.018 single feed injectors with ported bodies (from what we are told), timing set at 26*, Mahle replacement pistons that have been decked .120" to clear an old cam we were running (no time to mark for fly cutting). Compression is probably down to around 14:1.

It is the 200 gph FASS set @ 45-50 PSI. Im kinda getting the feeling that it may be my pistons spraying out of the bowl.

I kind of think it is your timing and the RPM being low.

Id play with timing and see what that does. I think id go down to 22* or so with it first and see what that gets you.

Odd that it runs fine up top and doesn't start popping until the rpm has been drug down into the mud though.

What kind of fuel filter are you running, fuel cell or fuel tank, and hows the return line ran?
The reason I ask is because, a guy I know had the same problem and it was a combo of the return line not going all the way to the bottom of the tank and getting air in the system. I've also heard of something as stupid as fuel filter being on backwards or trying to suck threw a push style filter.... also as stupid as this sounds it seems like it pops and cracks worse as the front end gets higher, which would be fuel related I believe.$.02

You know you might accidently be on to something. Right now I have it on the stock tank with the stock draw staw. And most of the time I dont keep over 1/4 of a tank of fuel in her. I am going to change my filter and put 10 or 15 gallons of fuel in her and see what that does. Seems like its getting air into the system when it picks the front end up. I feel like a dumbazz...:bang
Ill try changing all that stuff and see if that helps.

Thanks

damn 2wd guys and their wheelies...not realizing that gotta keep the tank half full...

LOL

we need more videos of that thing hanging the front tires Lynn!
