I have a 1999 3500 that I have had for several years almost trouble free. About two weeks ago when pulling a camping trailer I noticed if I stayed after it too hard the motor would falter like it was running low on fuel. A week later the overdrive quit working. The check engine light has been on for three years but I took it to the parts store and the spit out a ton of codes and so I chose the ones that looked like they applied and started working with that. I changed the fuel filter and the fuel pump. No change. I put on a fuel pressure gauge and it reads about 12 at idle and goes down the harder I run it until it hits 9psi then the motor falters.

9psi is the bottom edge of the scale but if the other lift pump was dead for a while then the damage has already been done.

That they are. But there may be something else but without the codes we can't really help to much. Post up the codes and we'll go from there.

An autozone read teh codes and the printout they gave me doesn't seem to have the code numbers just the definitions:

Engine torque control out signal circut low input
ECM fault-no CCD message from TCM
No CCD messages from TCM
Invalid tansponder (TP)-TP has different pin
No temperature rise seen from intake air heater
Low outout speed sebsor speed above 15 mph-P0720
Crank sensor condition (except diesel) -p0381

I also hooked a temporary fuel line and fuel source up and drove the truck and then It has about 1lb more fuel pressure when it fails it is indicating about 10 lbs instead of the 9

Crank sensor needs replacing according to that code. Crank and cam sensor helps the timing on the injection pump and helps run the tach.

I saw the (except diesel) and figured that didn't apply to me. Where is the crank sensor on this motor?

IIRC it's somewhere down by the starter. My truck doesn't have one so I'm not to sure but I'm pretty sure it's somewhere by the starter or vac pump.

It was located behind the starter. Dropped the starter and put the new sensor in but I still have the same symptoms. I guess the throttle position sensor is next and then a pump?

Hey Dave sorry to hear about the problems. Good luck with getting it fixed. On my truck when towing the monster fuel pressure only drops down to around 12ish. Very rarely will it go any lower and if it does it is for a second. Was it only doing that when you were towing or did it do it again without the trailer hooked up???

It does it if I stand on it hard just going uphill empty. I wonder if the lift pump I bought is bad?

I hate those ones at the local parts stores they are so junk, i would recommcand getting someone with a good one to read the codes

It looked like the guy was taking down the codes but then he went in and typed them into a computer that gave me the readout without the codes. I will try to find someone to give me the actual codes.
