A spooled rear end is more predictable in everyday driving over a Detroit or comparable locker. A little added tire wear is pretty much it. Some people say you'll twist off axles, but I can't see how it's any harder than the locking/unlocking of a Detroit. I had a truck with a Detroit in the rear, was loud and made driving a chore. Have also had trucks with welded rears, and one was spooled. They chirped the tires while turning, and noticably wore them faster, and would pitch the truck sideways in snow/ice, but were very manageable.
