so on a btu basis, 140k per gallon number 2, at about 4 dollars a gallon. propane at 21.5k btu per lb works out to $3.25 per gallon of diesel equivalent.that is about $7 for a btu to btu equivelent in diesel.Your first calculation is closer. At $0.50/lb, the diesel equivalent price of LPG is just a little over $3/gallon. So, on an energy density fuel replacement basis only, your savings are going to be ~ 25% * LPG replacement%.
However, as I mentioned before, the benefit of propane, is more than simply "btu from another source".
