What did these come in and are you guys running them stock or putting aftermarket axles/carriers in them? I see SCS carries a bunch of stuff for them. Whats the average cost for one? Do they come with a locker unit or posi or do you weld the open carrier? Then to mount them you weld on spring perches. What about brakes? Use them or remove them? Sorry for all the questions here, just trying to learn about them as I may be needing one in the future.

Most running one will have it welded in solid with no springs. No need for the brakes too. You can buy a spool or just weld it up.

a good bit, say the ring gear is 12in in a 106, in the 172 its probably 14 or 16in! the axles are alot bigger too. scs doesn't have any prices on their site but im guessing for 2-3 grand you can get a spool and axles for it. its the only way to go if your making any juice! van and eric stacey told me that they were busting a 106 with scs stuff in them so that goes to show you that they wont take it. also something to think about, can said that some dual street tires had more bite than the cut tires, its hard to believe but thats what he told another guy over the summer!!$.02

I think the dual street tires have more loading and unloading than the cut tires. This will break stuff fast!

well van told my buddy that truxus tires have more bite than the pitbulls do! not because of loading and unloading, just grip from the get go!! Its hard to tell. I know that my buddie broke the pins off the spool in the 106 that was in vans truck!!

Could be, but I would suspect you would see all of the pullers running them in the mod class if that was the case. Biggest issue with street tires is they grip, release, grip, release.

The stub shafts in my front 106 are twisted a bit, surley not from the West coast tracks, I think Chris did it :)

Stock with the universal joints, The SCS ones have the 5 bar claw joints which are supposed to be stronger.

I need some help here, is the 172 a replacement for the 106? I notice as I look for an F-106 that they seem to be older and the H172's seem to be a bit newer. What gives? Does anyone have any part numbers for the F-106's or maybe a cpl number off of the housing? I am having trouble Identifying these rear ends over the phone. Thanks in advance.

-Tom

either disturbed or myself should be able to pm you some numbers off the 106 in his truck. the 172 is just quite a bit bigger and takes a lot more abuse.

I found out from the local big truck salvage yard here that the h172 was popular in the older 70's-80's chevy and gmc school buses but they came with a deep number gear. 600 to 700 something gears. I know it is a far drive for alot of you but he said he has about 60-70 buses on his yard with them.
