Rockwell H 172.

Another question, how many bolts hold the third member to the housing on a F106? How many for an H172? The numbers that Disturbed gave me did not help the junkyard guy any. He was asking about the number of bolts holding the "chunk" to the housing. Any help?? How about axle tube dimensions? How many inches square? What is stock axle shaft diameter for an F106? Thanks in advance.

Tom,
i will count both of them for you tomorrow. I want to say the 106 has 1 1/2or 3/8 not much bigger than an D80, the 172 has a few different sizes depending on the # of splines. I believe mine are 40 spline at 2 1/4 that is the biggest they make i believe. I was told that they also made a 36 & 32 spline, the actual cover part of the housing on a 106 is centered in the tubes the 172 is offset to one side like 4 inches

when i step up to run the open driveline classes i plan on using a H172 cause they are just beefier than a 106.....not saying a 106 is weak but they have been known to break under the diesels torque.....i really aint worried about weight since its 7500-8000 in most classes and my truck will be VERY light......

I am going to run the 2" gun drilled axles and billet spool from SCS, which will hold the power and not be as heavy as a 172.

I don't mean to hijack your thread. But has anyone ever run the 2 1/2 ton top loader rockwells in a truck. Or are they to tall? I have a couple extra laying around I was thinking about using.

Thats kind of what I thought. They work great in my lifted chevy on 44's. But its still a little gasser motor.

Bad idea. Too tall and too heavy.

pretty much so.....i know too many guys that are breaking them in mud trucks......now if you built it to run rockwell's and sled pull that would be fine but to run them like we do no....not a good idea....there is alot of rockwell gasser trucks in florida that strictly sled pull but they are hugely lifted and running linked suspensions....

I asked around and my guy at the heavy truck shop said that these F106 and F172's are getting hard to find and we should start looking at some newer parts. Anyone tried anything more out?

there is a spicer rear that you can use as well i think its a sqhd... dont ask me any more than that. thats what holman run in 4 play and thats all they have ever referred to it as. i know im not much help. maybe someone lives in the wauseon oh area and could get a hold of them and find out exactly what it is. randy kliekamp with performance pros should be able to steer you in the right direction!

What about the dana's under the f-450,f-550? I think they are d110. I been thinking about it for one of my 2500's. Nothing in my area for open driveline classes.

the Dana 110 is an option.....

an SQHD rearend will run you big bucks.....

what about a dana 80 with planetaries welded onto the ends of the axles.....

seen a ford 9 inch front and rear setup with planetaries with a 1500 horse alky drinking ford motor........seemed to hold up fine......

Ok here are the specs on the axles:

106 has 16 bolts that hold the chunk in the housing and the tubes are 3 3/4 x 4

172 has 14 bolt that hold the chunk in the housing and the tubes are 4 1/4 x 5
