i was wondering if you guys could help me im looking for a rockwell f106 rear axle with a 620 ratio what exactly was these axles put in im having trouble finding one cause i really dont know what they were put in thanks in advance Jay

Look at semi/bus junk yards, there not quite as proud of them as some of the places Scott mentioned....Goody's truck parts in toledo OH has a ton of em.

They came in mid 70's F600 and F700 thats were i found mine there is going to be a tag on the back of the axle with the ratio on it. You want the square tubed style easier to weld every thing up to it. Depending on how much power you are making you may want to consider a F172 rear, i just blew my F106 up, cracked the housing it had the pinion support and ring gear support and im only running an unlimited single on DOT tires.

The H170 and H172 are just a alot heavier axle for the budget minded builder. You have to do alot more to the F106 to make it hold like the H172 if you can sacrifice a few more pounds....just my opinion

those axles are pretty easy to find. the 6.20 ratios are gettin a little more scarce these days.

the 106 should have held up with dots.
the pinion is actually smaller in a 106 than it is in an 80, but they seem to work a lot better.

thats why me and most of the other mod guys have axles with 172 pigs in them.

We run dauls we think it was caused by a bearing failure, this is the second 106 to break this year in our class out here, the other truck had Vans old 106 rear in it and it sheard the pins off the mini spool, that is why i bought a 172 for next year. Are you running a sheet metal housing with the 172 or the whole assembly?

I read somewhere that there are two different styles of F106 axles, the later ones had a high pinion option and you could get numerically lower gear ratios for them. Anyone know any details about this?

ok thats some great info since the pinion is smaller than a 80 i would think that would defeat the purpose so then my next question is what was the h172 put in to that way if i called a junkyard i can give them a model of truck or something like that i dont want to keep fixing busted housings and pinions all season long id like to do it right the first time also what do you have to do to make this axle fit in narrow the axle tubes or go with a sheetmetal housing thanks again for the help guys Jay

I dont know what the h172 that i have came in but it has airbrakes on it and it is the same lug pattern as my f106, as for the 106 having a smaller pinion than 80 im sure that is correct the pinion in the 106 is pretty big. I didnt break the pinion but did break the bearing on the end of it. i can get a set of dauls on mine that dont stick out any further than srw 80 does so you shouldnt have to shorten it, but i run rear wheels off a iszuz box truck same lug pattern. If you go with Haisley 8 lug conversion you will have to shorten the axles. The sheet metal housings would save weight but i think get pretty expensive and dont know how easy it will be to build one.

i run a sheet metal axle. the other was way too heavy. not sure where the axle came from to begin with i just bought a pig. if you cant find a 172 the 170s work good as well.

i guess the 106 would be the way to go for now how do they put the pinion support in these i know for the ring support they drill through the housing and install a rod with either a brass bushing or a roller beraing if im not mistaken ive never seen it just going on hear say of what they do to a dana 80 when the duals are put on and you start breaking the gears i like the idea of the iszuz duals that would keep the cost down where its not needed and could be spent other places thanks for all the help guys ive learnt alot from this post thanks again Jay

i would most likely go to Barker if your going to have a rearend built......i was just about ready to say Isuzu or Mitsubishi box/utility trucks all have the "budd 6" pattern on the rear axles.......i was thinking about using these when i go bigger.......but you guys already stated it.......if you guys go on www.racingjunk.com and look around i am always seeing 106/172 parts forsale.......stock and aftermarket........i plan on stepping up to a big rearend when i build a bigger motor.......what gears are you guys running in the front since you got 6.20's in the rear???? 6.13??? i plan on stepping up to a ford high pinion dana 60 in the front of my dodge cause they are proven stronger and there is 10X's more aftermarket parts for them than the dodge front axles........

I run 6.17 up front in my dana 60, got them directly from Dana as oem like $400- 450 for ring and pinion.

I believe mine are 6 or 6 1/2 wide i run 285 on them they work great. i was going to split them and make them wider but the truck works well the way they are so i didnt, mine are steel. Im sure if you look hard enough you could find a set of aluminum ones but for what they wanted for steel ones i hate to see what they would want for the aluminum. i run stanless simulators on mine.

you run a drop box or you running a stock case......ive thought about using a floater ford NP205 full of aftermarket parts......with a 2wd turbo 400 GM as a tranny......alot more parts for a turbo 400 than a 727......

I run a dropbox thats the only way to go. Im not fond of the 205 i have seen alot of them break in the gas trucks they wont hold up to a diesel, if the gasser cant keep them together. Most of the guys around here put profab parts in them and still destroy them. If you are going to the trouble to put the big rear in spend the money for the dropbox its well worth the insurance and you could still run the 2wd tranny in front of it and with all the different gear sets, you can really fine tune your setup.
