s300 vs s400 vs s500 question

I was just thinking earlier... a few years ago THE turbo for the 2.6(for the most part) was a 66mm s300. Now, it seems that since you can get a s400 with the same inducer, to fit in the same rules, but flow much more since its essentually a bigger turbo. When does a s400 get to small and a s500 take over?

I've notice 2 trucks here lately that had s500's in a set of twins... and while I don't know the size, I assume the that some of the bigger s400's kinda "overlap" some of the smaller s500's(not 100% sure on that, just speculation) in airflow. Is that true? Kind of like some of the bigger s300 variants have bigger inducers than some of the s400 you can find.

My hypothetical question/situation is this. Which would be better, a big s400 that flows xxx lbs/min or a small s500 that flows the same?(take into account I'm not sure what a small s500 is or if they even exsist, just kinda talking out my @ss and wondering) Would the only difference be the bigger s500 would be stronger and handle more abuse than the smaller s400? (Kinda why most guys are going with a s465 over a SB, the 400's shaft is bigger, therefore stronger)

Sorry for the ramble... anyone else have thoughts on this?

PS. How big can you go on a s400? 88mm comp wheel? 90mm? How small a compressor wheel can you get on a s500?

as of now Bulleye Power has an 83mm S400 and i think 87mm S500. but the exhaust wheel is like 98/108mm on a T-6 1.15 ar housing.

I think they have a 91mm s400, not sure though. I know they make s488's for sure though.

I know there is an s488, I've seen those... never seen a s500 in person. Do they actually make s500s with smaller compressors than the big s400s like they do with some of the s300/400's?

sizing

Largest compressor with the 88/96 turbine wheel should be 91mm, smallest comressor with the 98/108mm turbine wheel should be 87mm.

is there a formula to calculate this or are you going off of knowledge of trial and error??

I know of a guy that was having shaft problems with the 88mm 400's and he went to a 500 with a 95 mm wheel. The 500 charger also dwarfs the 400 like the 400 does the 300. I think he now has a 500 with something like a 110 mm wheel.

derail! Hey bigdodge! How fast is that lil dodge? Weren't u getting close to the 9's?

You will probably see a S500 sized charger in the 2.6" class at schieds this year... LOL

Just random info:

The S500's have an 11" and/or I believe 13 inch covers.

Large S400 covers are 9.5" and standard are 9"

Who says you can't?
