I will be going to the pulls in Alvorado, Tx this weekend (14th) and was wondering if I should hook? My worries are that, this is my daily driver and it needs to get me home. I don't have "big" power that most have. I do have a clutch that will hold (if I don't try to leave in a too high gear with my 3.55). But I don't have any traction bars yet. I don't have much money to fix it if it breaks. I know I will break parts but I would like to give it the best chance it's got. What are my chances of breaking something, I have never hooked before? Thanks for helping!!!

I always tell people that the first pull you do, should always be for fun and not for placement. So, hook up and see if you like it before you think about dumping a lot of money into the truck for pulling.

Don't get me wrong, pulling should always be for fun, but after a while, you start shooting for 1st or podium finishes.

If you can't afford for it to be down, then don't hook it.

Hooking the first time can be concerning, however, in the street class the weights in the sled are set light and just hook and pull! For the fun of it, just hook, it won't be that bad unless you choose to all out floor it! I've seen street-straight off the lot trucks pull 230 feet with no problem! And drive away and back home!

Give it a try and have fun doing it:rockwoot:

Hook up in the Boob class and pull it out the door....

You are getting lots of encouragement to hook it. If you can afford for it to be down then give it a shot. More than likely you will probably just blow a ujoint, or possible the spiders or axle shaft in the D80. All can usually be fixed for less than $500. I am just cautious the first time out on a d80 with a posi I blew the spiders.

I pulled for two years winning alot and drove it to every pull. It was fun until the nv5600 mainshaft too a SH** when I was 2 hours from home. So its up to you. but i think you would be fine, just dont be pi$$ed if something does happen

Alverado is very soft dirt. He should not have any concerns with spiders or gearing. It is extremely unlikely he will be able to get enough traction to break them.

Thanks for the words of encouragement!!!! I am running a worn set of Toyo open country m/t (285/75/r16) with my 3.55 I was thinking of leaving in 3rd low????? I think I could wip up some bump stops, would that help prevent wheel hop!!! I am not looking to win (for now) I will be happy if I can make it off the line and not break anything yet.

just wip up some bump stops for now. Run 3rd gear low range. I have seen some people take ratchet straps with axle strap loops and tie the rear axle up to the bumper or the hitch to keep the rear axle from walking forward and causing the bump stops to fall behind the factory leaf spring blocks (or the axle tubes, depending on how you have the bump stops setup on the truck). This may also prevent you from pushing the carrier bearing out of its housing and distroying it.

well flatbed, im glad you asked this question because i was kind of afraid too as well. I am wanting to pull in the work stock class around here this year, but im just afraid of breaking too bad. I could afford a u joint every now and again but not so much a new rearend or rebuilt tranny....what to do what to do

Just do it and hope for the best. I drove my truck to all the pulls. Up until we got on a ****ty track and i broke an axle 4hours away. That kind of make you rethink everthing.

ok so say i break an axle or something of the sort, how much would i expect to pay to have it fixed? i wouldnt pull if i didnt have a little money set aside just in case, as this is my daily driver. P.S. not trying to steal the thread, just getting some insight:rules:

I got a stock axle for $50 but if your going to pull again you better upgrade then your looking at some money.

well, i guess time will tell if i have the testicular fortitude/financial means to pull. Thanks for the input

Thanks for the tip!!! So I just put a strap around the axel and the hitch/bumper and tighten it up? That simple? How tight?

Any other tips?????
