I'm looking at swapping in a manual trans but not sure which one. Is there any different parts or procedures that come into play with the 6 speed that are different from the five speed, and what are the pros and cons of both I know about the fifth gear nut on the nv4500. My main concerns are the drive shafts, will it bolt up the same as the 5 speed and so on. Also I don't need anyone trying to tell me to build my auto cause I don't want an auto and I know the prices of both. Thanks in advance!

from what I have heard the 5spds are actually better after you fix the 5th gear somehow permanently. Its tougher lighter and less expensive to work on than the nv5600. I have no idea about swapping though...

Same bellhousing. Same starter I think but the 13inch flywheel with the 6 speed needs a spacer plate for the starter.

nv4500 is much cheaper and easier to mess with than the end-loader style 6 speeds nv5600 and g56. It might be fun for you to try and swap in a synchronized 5 or 6 speed eaton fuller tranny. Just would need a sae 2 adapter plate from a 6bt or isb cummins 1986-2002, but you would need to figure out some way to mate one of them to your transfer case. Might be tough, im working on that right now on a eaton fs6406 tranny I got out of a ford f650 looks like it might have to be a 2wd for a while.

The 5600 uses a different rear mount, same crossmember IIRC, driveshafts are not the same, and it is one heavy mother hubbard. For towing, they are great, but they do not shift as fast as the 4500.

id go 5 speed, fix the 5th gear with a fully correctly splined mainshaft and it should last a while. There not to bad. I have a shop here in town that puts all new bearings, syncros, rings and will throw the new mainshaft in there for 500 dollars. I bought the mainshaft and new 5th gear and brought them with the tranny to him and he put all the bearings and syncros in it and made it like new for 500. I can shift it halfway fast and it never grinds or slips out of gear or anything. I would do the 5 speed just for price and parts availibilty reasons alone. Not to mention having that one extra gear to row gets old.

Thanks for the info everyone the only reason I'm asking about the 5600 is cause I found a complete conversion with 65k on it for 1200 minus the t-case and to me that's pretty damn cheap

Yeah thats a good buy, id jump on, that 5600 around here at least is worth 1500 alone. I sold 2 of them in the last month for 1500 and 1600 in ONE day. But if there is something wrong with the tranny then crap, it is worth 700 or 800 as a core, they aren't making any more of them. American gears and shafts outta them are worth some money, I have parted out individual gears out of them and easily made 1200 when I sold all the good stuff, shoot, the case is worth 300 easily. What I am saying is that is probably a good buy.

Yea I just need to know how to convert my t-case and How much it will cost me to do it

Ok if it's a 2002 nv5600 what transfer case does it have it's in a 3500 and where can I get the 29 spline input shaft??? I need help fast!!

It could have the DLD or the DHD, just depends on how the truck was ordered. I think the inputs between the auto and the 6spd were the same, operative word is think! LOL

So how would I go about swapping the input shaft where would I get one and what transfer case is behind my auto???

Swap the input gear in the T case or get another T case would be the easiest, I do not think you will find a shaft to fit a 5600 with the lower spline count.

Yea that was my plan cause a tranfer case is like 12-1500$ and a input shaft in Tulsa is 319+ tax I'm still trying to find a place that has either new or used shafts. And I'm trying to find a write up on how to change the shafts I could figure it out I'm sure but I like to have an idea of why I'm doing before I jump in a hole
