The short version is I have had this problem for a long time and cant seem to remedy it.

Hard starts when hot
Dead pedal
LOUD engine clatter, it sounds like it is stuck at 25* all the damn time, truck is sluggish when this is happening.

After running at a constant speed for roughly 4-5 miles the timing sounds like it goes back down, the engine gets whisper quiet, and spool-up is noticeably faster. If you come to a stop the thing goes right back to the way it was.

Changed the Vp an still have all the problems but the hard starts. I cant check codes because its in my ford and I have no OBD2 connection. My IAT stays between 107 and 112 no matter what the ambient temp is.

Could it be a combination of the IAT and TPS sensors?

Any other ideas?

I thought about that also. It is a 00 engine.

When it has a fit the tack locks up on the CTS. (if it has a fit at 2143rpm, the engine will slow down and the display will not change until it picks back up. Pumping the throttle exactly 3 times will fix it.

We had one with similar issue here, cant remember the exact symptoms but intermitant run bad was one of them it was a 00 and had to replace the crank sensor in the side of the block

This one runs like a pig for the exact same distance every time is the odd part.

Same thing with yours?

i dont remember its been over a year ago. If you had a Vantage pro you could back probe the sensor and watch it work with out the OBDII. I do remember the dash would work then not then work again

Also 2000 has both cam and crank sensors so 1 maybe acting up and the engine is running on the other

I didnt really ever suspect them. May need to buy both then and see if they fix it.

I would get a labscope and test them. Dont think the sensors are expensive but no reason to waiste money if you can test them first. If you were close i would tell you to bring it over and i would put my Modis on it and watch both the cam and crank at the same time to see if they are the problem. Also have you checked all the grounds to the ECM? Pin it out at the ECM to the ground through the harness?

I have not done a ground test yet. They way I wired the engine in, It all goes to one plug and then to the battery. In theory, if it was a ground nothing would work sensor wise. I wouldnt suspect that that given it is consistently smoothing out on the same hill at the same spot every time. LOL

Guess I need to find some tools then.

Dumb question but is the hill on the way to some were? like work? So you drive it every day? The reason i ask if it is a cam/crank sensor it maybe time related ecm doesnt see the sensor for "x" amount of time. Time the drive you make to the hill and then drive some were different but the same length of time. It maybe setting a limp condition some how based on not seeing one of the sensors and thats why it always happens in the same spot

I only drive it on the weekends usually. It happens at the same spot leaving work every time, same thing leaving my house going to work, and from my house to a friend's. It only quits the clatter if you dont allow it to return to an idle. Once it see's idle its right back to a bag of hammers rolling down a hill.

So it is time related, same distance from each place. I would start with checking the cam sensor but still pretty crazy it does it.

I wonder if a 00 and 01 use the same sensor pn? I have a spare one of those.

I just went to autozone's website and they have the same part number for the cam sensor for 00 and 01

No problem, hope it fixes. Intermitent problems can be a major PITA

Correction, after paying closer attention, the tach does keep working when it dead pedals. The AAPS shows to hang up on the screen. Starting to suspect the ECM, it may be looking for the auto trans that isnt there.

replaced cam and crank sensors, tested the IAT sensor, swapped vp's and its still happening.

ECM next?
