Stacking Edge EZ and vanAaken R?

Stacking boxes...one more time.

I have a VA that plugs into the Data Link and the VP(which I think makes it the R model.) I'm wondering if I can stack it with an Edge EZ and if it matters which one plugs into the Data Link first?

TIA

I finally got all the plugs into the right spots. The Data Link wasn't where the instructions said it would be and I wasn't sure how to mesh up the VA Map Sensor and the EZ MAP sensor, so I guessed. I was a bit nervous to start it up, but I turned the key and it started right up. No codes!

So, I took it out for a drive and I am TOTALLY amazed. Builds boost much faster. Seems like twice as fast and at least 10 psi more at WOT than it did before. At WOT going up a moderate grade I hit 38-40 psi and felt something happen but I couldn't say whether it was defueling or the wastegate opened or I blew a boot, but it sort of stalled. I about crapped my pants but it kept on running so I figured I was ok. Bonus: even at WOT EGTs stay below 1100.

So the answer is you can stack an Edge EZ and VA box and it's not a bad combination. I honestly don't know what setting the EZ is on. I'll check and get back to you on that.

I didn't see much smoke but it was getting kind of dark, and out here we don't have any street lights, so I might have missed it.

I might be imagining this but it almost seemed quieter.

After adding the AFE megacannon, and the EZ I guess I'm ready for some reliable fuel so the Glacier Diesel lift pump is going in next. And then it's a 4" exhaust from sourceautomotive.com and I think I'll be set until my clutch goes out.:rockwoot:

I believe that both of those boxes bump the timing. So you are double bumping the timing, meaning that your injectors may be spraying outside of the bowl. This can put excessive heat in the wrong places and raise cylinder pressure high enough to pop the head gasket. I don't know much about the Van Aiken -R, so don't quote me on it, but the ez definitely bumps the timing.

I knew it was too good to be true. I know the R modify's timing....I guess I'll hold off on any more test drives until I find out more. Thanks for the warning!!!!

With both boxes doing the same thing, adding timing,it could be a bad thing if your one who is not studded and ringed.Timing means cylinder pressures will rise and with both of these boxes adding timing it could be a result you may not want.

Also keep in mind with Van Aaken out of business your VA box if it fails is not going to be able to be repaired.

Good advice. Thanks Hammer.

Several other posts from different forums advise the following:
a) stacking them is a bad idea
b) stacking them is fine. Rational being: the older VA boxes do not affect timing only fueling. In an earlier post on this thread I mistakenly said my VA was a "vanAaken R" but mine was purchased in 2001, which I believe, was before the R was available.
c) stacking them is okay for daily driving but definitely not a safe set up for towing
d) stacking them is fine but that I should disconnect the data link from the EZ

I sure liked the way it ran with both boxes hooked up together...maybe I should get some studs and rings...but that's just not in the financial cards at the moment. So, today I drove to work with option "d" in place.

It ran okay with the EZ data link disconnected but I definitely lost low end throttle response and high end boost pressure. Felt pretty much like it had reverted to using the VA only. Tomorrow I'm going to take the VA out and just go with the EZ and see how that works.

Your van Aaken box which plugs into the map sensor and Injection pump is an R box. The older van Aaken boxes were called CPC's and plugged into the pump only.

I wouldn't recommend running both these boxes at the same time. Both do timing so there is a chance of running to much. If you wanted to stack boxes I would suggest a Smarty on a no timing level with the van Aaken (we have always had better luck with the older R boxes rather than the EZ) or just move up to an Adrenaline by Quadzilla or a Comp.

:thankyou2:

That settles it. The EZ and the VA are coming off and the Adrenaline is going on.
