Ok if i let my truck sit overnight and go out in the morning let the grid cycle and start the truck it sound sick. It white smokes and sounds like it just barely going to start. It has to crank over a couple of times and has a horrible idle for a couple of minutes until it gets warm. Any ideas????

I am thinking it might be fuel related from the pump to the injecter or a return line.

All of the above are possible.

Which truck?

Id be looking for a prime issue between the tank and injection pump first.

On the 02. i can let the fass pressure up and it will still do it. and i just replaced all the fuel line from the fass to the Injector pump.

Is your FASS holding prime? or are you having to re-establish prime?

no, is it maintaining prime between the pick-up and the FASS pump?

I know your pressure in the VP44 feed line will drop off, thats because of the overflow valve and its normail funtion.

If that is fine, then I would look to your overflow valve on your VP, they don't go out too often, but I've seen it before.

When you turn the key to run and the lift pump does it's usual 2 second cycle, if you've got pressure then you should have prime.

As Tyler sais. But also, the sound of the pump is different. If your pump runs for a second (or a few) adnd makes one sound, then changes tone, it may be losing prime. Ive seen this a couple of times. It has to do with an air leak between the fuel in the tank and the pump on the FASS.

Can be a line, a fitting, o-ring.

I'm not saying that this is where your problem is. Just that it is the first place to start.

Work your way from the tank to the motor and back, in order to troubleshoot your problem.

Also, this hasn't been mentioned. Check your batteries and your grounds. You'd be amazed what all can act screwy if theyre off just a little bit.

The cranking issue doenst sound like a battery connection but i did check the batteries out. To me it sounds like the injectors are loosing prime.

Whats the deal with the relief valve at the inj pump????

Could the problem be bad orings at the connecting tubes or would there be fuel in the oil if they were bad????

The injector lines have corrosion growing around the nipple that goes onto the connetor tubes and on the outlet on the inj pump. Could this be part of the problem. But there is no fuel leaking at these areas.

This can be good for my new HRVP44 for sure. It needs fixed asap.

When I was having a hard start I never had a problem with white smoke or nothing. I just had to crank on it for about 10secs before it would fire off. Once it fired though it was perfectly smooth. And it would only do it after sitting for a while. Mine turned out to be a bad connector tube o-ring.

Also, Justin in Elgin has your injectors. He said he'd give them to Jared.

Ok truck has been sitting for about 4 days due to a tranny line issue. I finally got if fixed and when i fired it up it did the same dang thing. Kindof sputters a little and blows white smoke. Its loosing prime i am 100% sure of but i cant find any leaks.

If you are puffing white smoke in a bad way, I would guess that an injector is stuck open. It is hard to start because it is much harder to have pressure when one is free flowing. If you have access to a DRB, you can shut individual injectors down to try and find the one that is hung up, but I would pull them all and send them to be checked.

Can't do that on a 2nd gen. No fancy electrical injectors.

Justin, check your crank case for fuel in your oil.

Yes, you can do the injector kill test with a DRB on a VP truck, I know because I have done it before.

Interesting. Didn't know you could do that. I thought it was only for a 3rd gen.

Yeah i have dont that before messing around with the new snap on scanner.

However if it was an injector it would idle different and be blowing smoke. This smoke white. If the injector was stuck there would be some other signs of it surely??? Plus these were from II and put in in october.

Normally there's some noise associated with a hung injector. Knocking and what not. Check your oil and make sure there's no fuel in it. You might not have a hung open injector but maybe one that's leaking down when the motor shuts off.

How about a leak on the return line? After I changed the head gasket on my '01, it would act like this once in a while in the morning. Turns out the return line banjo bolt on the back of the head was loose-if I parked it nose down, everything was cool-if I parked it nose up, it would leak. Tightened it up and all was good. Never would have figured that the return could have caused this-but it did for me.

Yeah i have had the return line problem before and have already checked it out.
