Surge and ticking...Any ideas?

This is on my conversion truck in my sig. I just got it running. The truck will buck back and forth and pop out of the exhaust around 2000 rpm. I can get it to happen in 3rd gear with the converter locked if I roll into it. While this happens there is a ticking noise from the driver's side of the engine. Does this sound familiar to anyone?
 
Sounds like you may be dropping rp.
 
I had the smarty on 7 with stock rail pressure and default everything else. It seems to happen around 20,000 psi. I can see 117% load as well which was surprising. The truck will buck violently. If I drive it easy there are no problems. It's when that converter locks up.
 
Just an update: The crankshaft position sensor's signal was breaking up. I put in a new sensor and all is well.
