If you guys haven't seen this.... it's from another site that a very mod friendly Dodge dealer posted

Starting with the next wave of Cab and Chasis in middle 2010, they are gonna be equipped with the newest tree hugger BS, er, I mean the latest emissions BS. Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is a combo of water and urea. I just finished a class on this and it looks bleak for the owners of 3500/4500/5500 6.7L cab and chasis owners. Non cab and chasis owners don't have to expect this problem until 2013/2015. Trucks using DEF will have an 8 gallon tank for storing the DEF. The estimate says trucks will use 1% to 2% of DEF as compared to fuel usage.  Lets examine these numbers. The DEF is $12.00 per gallon or $96.00 to fill the tank not including labor. There is also a filter that has to be changed on a regular basis, but I don't have a price on it yet. For argument sake, I am going to use a mile per gallon of 15 as a average number. I am sure Mitch can give more insight as to how MPG's are on a 6.7L.

For 100 gallons you travel 1500 miles
Every 100 gallons uses at minimum 1 gallon of DEF.
That means you can use 800 gallons of fuel before the DEF tank is empty. Or 400 gallons depending on how hard you run.

800 gallons times 15 MPG equals 12,000 miles before the DEF needs refilling.

400 gallons times 15 MPG equals 6,000 miles.

That means you may need to fill the DEF every oil change or every other oil change.

If you get down to 1 gallon of DEF, you will get a message that says you have 500 miles to refill the DEF tank. If you ingore/don't refill the tank, the engile will not start after the 500 miles.

If you don't use the right DEF, a sensor will alert the ECM and the truck may not start.

Whatttt !!

I bet it will only take a week before someone has a DEF delete kit that tells the computer the tank is full.

Not only bleak for diesel trucks but this system will supposedly be on ALL diesel engines by '15. Yes that includes tractors and heavy equipment. I'm not 100% sure on that but according to several CAT and JD dealers I've talked to it is a sure thing. A Peterbilt salesman showed me a sales report the other day. The new trucks have the urea system which adds 20k to the new purchase price. 1 year ago Pete was selling 3200 to 3600 trucks a month nationwide...........600 a month so far this year. How far does the pendulum have to swing towards "green" until it swings back to "common sense"?

I have already seen it at truck stops for $6 a gallon. It's going to be just like oil and available from multiple manufacturers. At the Benz dealers it is as high as $36 a gallon. From what I have heard they will not be able to void warranties based on type of fluid used as long as it meets the manufacturers specs. OTR trucks are already using it and because it's made from urea (a component of urine) they call it exhaust piss. LMFAO

Dont expect it to be to much longer at the current rate of emissons and rising cost of the Diesel option that they will no longer be a viable platform for light duty trucks. I hope someone intervenes and stops this nonsense before this happens. The average consumer just wont buy a $10K+ diesel option, that requires periodical maintenence, more components to break or go wrong, and wont get any better mileage than a gasser.

That someone should be all of us - we have to stop the damned socialist liberals from dismantling our great nation any further.

if they can make DPF pipe delete kit they can delete this!!!!!!
I love EFI LIve

Started locking Dodge ECMs a year ago... there's always work-arounds.

The great thing about urea is that it is after the engine, and will therefore be the easiest-to-bypass smog technology that has ever existed.

my 06 is at 22k and thats good as Ill not go any newer, the last full year of production with no emisions junk! when the wheels fall off someday Ill put them back on!

That is my post from another site, but I must clarify something on the Mod friendly dealer part. I understand if you install a new radio and the transmission goes south, the radio didn't have anything to do with it. I understand if you have a chip/programmer and your power windows quit working, these are unrelated. BUT if you have stacked boxes/twin turbos or any other un-approved mods and the trans/diff/engine takes a dump then you are on your own. As the saying goes...if you are gonna play, you have to pay...

How long before they lock up the ECMs? That's the big question.
Started locking ECMs in March 2009. Am sure the aftermarket will figure a way around it. But if your truck comes into my shop with DTC U1601 you are probably not gonna like the news... This DTC means the ECM does not have a calibration installed or has un-approved calibration. The ECM will have power but the lack of approved software will not allow the vehicle to be started or driven. If this DTC is set because you uploaded un-approved software, the warranty will not cover it...

Sounds fair to me...that's the way it should be, Thanks!!!

Just an update for those of you that don't follow it too closely, they have.

I know it is Dave and I never said you'd do anything you shouldn't. You understand mods more than most dealers which is why I said that. I also think most understand you're not going to fix something they modded. It does seem you've changed your tune a bit though. I didn't think your posts were for DOF only but, maybe they are ? It was some interesting info and I thought others may like to read about it.
