Hey everyone, I was driving to Indy this morning to pick up a couple parts and was rolling into the trottle and heard a pop and lost overdrive and I thought that was it until I stopped at the gas station and realized I also lost reverse. Truck still shift fine 1st-3rd. Any ideas before I rip it out would be great.
Thanks, Jared

Are you sure you have 3rd gear? The direct clutch pack (front) is used in reverse, 3rd, and OD. I cracked the direct drum AND piston had similar symptoms. I would air test the clutch packs before pulling the trans.

It's possible that the overdrive/direct clutch pack lost a snap ring and came apart. If it came apart, it's possible to obstruct the overdrive piston/clutch pack which would explain losing overdrive.

The loss of reverse can be explained by losing the overdrive/direct clutch pack.

There is an over-running clutch behind the overdrive/direct clutch pack that would still allow 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears.

In short, you're going to have to remove the overdrive section to know for sure. It can be removed without pulling the tranny, but if it were my truck, I'd remove the whole tranny and do a few upgrades or at least new clutches whiles you have it on the workbench.

thanks guy but I pulled the trans today and got the front pump pulled and the front drum, I was thinking the same that I exploded the front drum but everything looked good. Im not completely sure if its 3rd or O/D that I lost. Im still kinda new to the tranny thing. Any other ideas

Yes, you have to have the direct clutch in the OD section working in order to have reverse.

It's already been mentioned, but check for a broken snap ring in the OD section.
