I heard that a couple of ford diesel mechanics are running old transmission fluid straight in thier tanks of thier own trucks and they say runs good any thoughts?

on an older, disposable motor, go ahead. fincky, one that costs a few grand to replace...... no thanks. try running something designed to burn, not something that is made to try not to.

Its also not great for lubrication because it has friction modifiers in it to help prevent slipping.

Agreed 100% to the above.

A good friend ran it for about 12k in his 01 cummins. Went through fuel filters like crazy. Wasn't worth the savings having to buy new filters every few thousand miles. I wouldn't do it if you paid me to.

Thats cuz there fords! they dont care about them they know there junk just as well as we do. haha

anyway im sorry about that post.. i would think the old transmission fluid is full of contaminents like friction material. That would accelerate wear on the injection pump and injectors too. Plus like BGBLDODGE said it has friction modifiers.. bad idea

the detergents in the ATF are for cleaning, but they don't burn and tend to deposit on valves and whatnot.... just a little more food for thought

A 10% ATF to 90% diesel mix runs great, new ATF is actually a pretty good fuel system cleaner. And like stated earlier, if you don't filter it, you'll go through fuel filters fast enough to negate all cost savings. I don't purposely look for used ATF or waste motor oil, but when I change the tranny fluid or engine oil in one of my vehicles, I always use it as fuel for my diesel truck. Ran lots of used oil through my 99' with no ill effects, and have run quite a bit of used ATF/WMO through my 98' 12 valve.

I actually notice better fuel economy when I add heavy oil such as used gear oil from the rear-end. Seems like the heavier oil has a higher BTU content or something and it makes the whole batch of diesel run like the old Low Sulfur Diesel instead of the newer thin ULSD.
