U joint shield and ladder bar material

Ok, I plan on a double bar setup.

shields: Im thinking aluminum to help with the weight. My truck is a QC shorty so every pound counts. And I plan on over-building them, the aluminum containing a severed drive line is the part that worries me.

I need to know how wide some 1480 joints are.

1480s are 4 3/16" wide.

I wonder how much ladder bars made with 2" DOM, 1/2" wall would weigh running from the rear axle to just under the drivers door on my ext cab short box...

What did you use for end links? Tractor 3 pt arms cut in half?

2" Dom.250 wall/ 2" O.D. = 4.673 lbs/lineal foot
1.5" sch. 80 pipe/1.9" O.D. = 3.631 lbs/lineal foot

with joints and brackets you're looking at roughly 80lbs total.

They are heavy, I cut the 3rd points in half had a machine shop turn down the DOM and slid the links over and then welded the link to the tubing.
Mine run to just behind the door on my extended cab.

Why not just thread the 2" dom to accept a heim joint threaded in? Thats how I did mine.

I was going to do the same thing till i started asking around and nobody had a 1 1/8 left hand tap to accept my heim's so i just got 1 1/8 nuts both right and left hand thred and welded them to the end

a friend of mine built all of his shields out of aluminum and it weighs in at 38 pounds.......regular cab long bed truck.......and he has 3 or 4 loops on the rear and 2 on the front shaft......pretty sweet setup......im having him build me the same setup under my ram.....

I took mine to the local machine shop where they repair miners, threaded them for $20.:rockwoot:

Ditto, my guy already had the 1 1/4" left tap as well, if he didn't it might have been cheaper to to lathe then buy the tap.

Yep, they had the taps & everything there & the shop is 10 minutes from my house. They used a 30 ton drill press & had them all done in about 15 minutes.
