Thats where your wrong 4340 is just a harden alloy of 304 but it is magnetic because of the hardening process. They both have the same amount of chromium but twice the nickel content. I have a pile of 4340 material that sees 90k psi of water 24hrs a day and none of it will ever rust.

I really dont mean to blow up your thread, but 4340 is not anywhere close to 304 stainless steel... First off, 4340 is a low carbon steel. The Chromium content in 304ss is 18.0-20.0. 4340 is .7-.9%... Nickel in 304ss is 8-10.5 and 4340 is 1.65-2.0. 4340 WILL RUST if not treated with some sort of coating.

Im just calling it what the manufacturer calls it. But it has high chromium. They dont have a coating on them and the ones on my truck have been outside for over a year in iowa and roll on gravel everytime they come of the trailer and look perfect. Maybe you should do alittle more research cause you can buy 4340 that is 18%chromium and 18%nickel. There are many types of 4340.
