Im lookin for some good pics of a welded Dana 60 front open carrier. Ive got to send mine out to the fabricator and he wants some more specifics on the weld pattern. I figured I would remove the ring and just give him the carrier. He wants to get it hot and tig it, but will that hurt the bearings? I did a search on here but didnt find exactly what im lookin for.

Not a 60 but a 14 bolt... He can get some ideas...

Ahh-Ha, I get it. Fully disassembled the bearings will not be exposed to the heat. Nice pics thanks.

I use 7018, 3/32 or 1/8 size welding rod. For the diffs that i have welded.

Don't just weld the small gears together!!! That will break! Weld the bigger side gears (the ones that are splined for the axles ) to the carrier and the small gears to the bigger gears and then the small gears to the carrier... That will be much stronger!!! Also take the bearings off the carrier, have the shop heat up the carrier, weld it all up and then put the welded carries in a bucket of sand or wrap in insulation and let it cool for about a day...this will let the whole thing cool down slowly. I have done hundreds of rearends like this and NEVER had one break!

Or stick the welded carrier in the oven to let it cool down.

So I can weld the gears to the carrier also? the different metals (carrier and gear) will take the weld?

Anyone ever have trouble with the truck wanting to pull with a welded diff? My buddy just welded his, and it pulls HARD left, like run off the road hard. One small boosted launch was enough to tell something is not right! With the open diff it tracked perfect though.

I would say something broke in the axle or weld. I had to drive home one time on the front end, that I had welded, so I had to unlock one hub; and every time I shifted it was a challenge to keep it on the road.

I run a spool in the front of my 79, and if you ever need to drive it on the road in 4 wheel drive, i just lock one hub in. I only lock both in if im pulling it or in some dump $hit. But like stated above i would spend the $100-$150 dollars on the spool.

Sounds like your CAD isn't locked in... that would make it pull to the left.
