What if we could do away with camshafts in turbodiesel engines, the possibilities would be endless.... i mean hell we can fire injectors with solenoids, so why not valves? could you imagine the lift possibilities?

The idea of using solenoids to control valves is not new, but there would definitely have to be a lot more work to get them anywhere near usable in the environment they would be exposed to in a turbo-diesel.

ok, well i knew you would have an answer!

let me re-phrase, If hypothetically you could design a reliable engine with no camshaft and solenoids for for pushrods, RELIABLY

I understand completely! let's say hypothetically what all would be involved

F1 cars have been using crazy stuff like this for a while. I've got to imagine that those are exposed to far harsher environments than the valves in a diesel pickup. I think a "cam-less" diesel would be pretty cool.

I haven't kept up on F1 cars, but I think boost would be a significant difference in the two environments.

Boost would be a difference but I would think the 5-10,000rpm changes and WOT to 0 throttle and back up to WOT would be similar in harshness.

there was an engine that was camshaftless, but i can't remember who or where it was

there is a 2-stroke crosshead marine diesel that uses air, without a camshaft

Now that's something I dunno. Some go join an F1 team and find out some more about this. LOL

I dunno about solenoids controlling valves..

But, in all seriousness.. Where are the over head cam engines? Those started getting popular in the what.. 1980s?

Imagine a dual over head cam for a 24v cummins... Hell, any of them for that matter. Maybe even with variable valve timing.. It isn't new technology by any means. This is just like the "what ifs" of everything else to be honest.. It may hurt longitivity a little, but it is interesting to ask "what if?"

A single overhead cam for the Cummins is being worked on... at least it was.

Honestly though, if we got rid of cams, what would everybody fight about ?

how bout slides f instead of traditional valves, like a knife valve...... weighted cam to throw the slide open further , longer based on rpm.......... lower weight than a traditional valve, so lower mass reciprocating
