The idea of using solenoids to control valves is not new, but there would definitely have to be a lot more work to get them anywhere near usable in the environment they would be exposed to in a turbo-diesel.
F1 cars have been using crazy stuff like this for a while. I've got to imagine that those are exposed to far harsher environments than the valves in a diesel pickup. I think a "cam-less" diesel would be pretty cool.
Boost would be a difference but I would think the 5-10,000rpm changes and WOT to 0 throttle and back up to WOT would be similar in harshness.
I dunno about solenoids controlling valves..
But, in all seriousness.. Where are the over head cam engines? Those started getting popular in the what.. 1980s?
Imagine a dual over head cam for a 24v cummins... Hell, any of them for that matter. Maybe even with variable valve timing.. It isn't new technology by any means. This is just like the "what ifs" of everything else to be honest.. It may hurt longitivity a little, but it is interesting to ask "what if?"
Honestly though, if we got rid of cams, what would everybody fight about ?
