What if.....

The idea of using solenoids to control valves is not new, but there would definitely have to be a lot more work to get them anywhere near usable in the environment they would be exposed to in a turbo-diesel.

Yep.

The thing that people need to remember, is that this technology usually comes about due to tightening emissions regulations. Apparently the manufacturers are able to keep meeting the regulations being set for diesel engines without this technology, so I'm going to say it will be quite a while before we see it, if ever. I think we would have to graduate to vvt first before they would even consider making a jump like this.

Honestly though, if we got rid of cams, what would everybody fight about ?

Ive seen a valve-less engine, I can not find the video now tho. It was from a japanese car maker, it had a cam-like shaft instead that had 'lobes' with slots cut thru them so as the lobe turned it would open and then block off the inlets to the cylinders allowing intake and exhaust gasses to pass thru. a pretty neat idea...
 
What if my truck made 3000 hp and never broke. You would never beat me!!!:hehe:
