What Type Of Tranny Flud?

One thing to think about not only are we looking for clutch bite we need to look for lubrication. All of the planetaries need lube to save the gears and the spacers between them. For longevity of the geartrain 5w-20 would be good, but not sure of the clutches in a high HP application.

Cold motor oil in slip-a-matic transmissions = hard shifts & blown seals, also the detergents in motor oils make for major problems.

That is roughly what most of the tractor trans-hydraulic oil is viscosity wise, from what I've read.

In my experience, the hydraulic oils seem to offer better lubrication for hard parts and also don't have nearly as much, if any friction modifier in them to aid in clutch slippage and smooth shifts when compared to your average automatic transmission fluids.

The clutch manufacturers (such as Alto) know what people are running for oils and don't have any problems with people doing it.

If I remember right the vicosity of the tranny fluid comes in about 8W to 10W. So I not sure why a 5W-20W would be a problem. The detergents could be an issue, but non detergent oil is available.

I have never seen a multi viscosity oil that was non detergent...straight weight oils abound in non detergent varieties...$.02

I was at the local farm store the other day and can't remember what I saw. I know it was a non detergent oil, but maybe it was straight 20W.

I know our tractor hydraulic oil (the brown kind) is rated at 10w-20 if I remember right...

I run valvoline atf +4 full synthetic it says recommend for chrysler vehicles in the jug the only place I can find it is at the meijer store and its not cheap when you buy 20 qts of it

My truck has tranny built by Preble Co. Diesel with Goerend parts and Dave told John also to run the Lube Guard that way you dont have to run ATF+4. Never had any troubles w/ mine.
