Whats better pulling hi side or low?

whats the difference in wheel speed 5200 at 3rd low is about 30 to 31 mph and 4th low is about 34mph with 4000 rpm cause no street truck or pro street truck will turn big rpm with that big gear so why wouldnt u run a smaller gear with more R's and not snuff the charger or if u need to get out of the throttle u can bring the little gear back up

What gear and tire size....
Track Dusty or Tacky
Are you hooked to the track at this RPM?
What is your ground speed?
You might see 5200RPM but yet only 20MPH ground speed being hooked to the track is 100000000000000 times more important than puffing your chest out and saying you carry x amount of RPM down a track......
I would rather carry a lower RPM but be hooked to the track than just spining my wheels....

we only got two tracks that measure ground speed and both were bitting and one brought me down to 4800 and my speedo said 29 and i was at 25 track speed and the other time i pulled with out weights in the hero gear 4th low and i was at 37mph speedo speed and i think 32 track speed but that time was a light sled and i was in the street class and went out the door but it snuffed out at 3200 atfer i was out the gate

with the Hero Gear (4th low) its hard to keep up with big chargers on r red dirt tracks now junk tracks that suck i can understand but i like twisting the motor to the bigger rpm

If you have the right gears in the truck it's not a problem..

Depending on the charger you are running, most of these trucks probably run better around 3800-4500rpm than at 5200rpm.

You may not make your peak horsepower at 5200 rpm, but wheel speed is wheel speed.. you just need to be able to make the power to spin the tires...
Haisley tends to like to set up trucks spinning 4300-5000 rpm with 33's and 5.13's..

3000 rpm with 33's
1:1 low 3.55 = 30.5 mph
1:1 low 4.10 = 26.42 mph
1:1 low 4.88 = 22.2 mph
1:1 low 5.13 = 21.12 mph

4000 rpm with 33's
1:1 low 3.55 = 40.69 mph
1:1 low 4.10 = 35.23 mph
1:1 low 4.88 = 29.6 mph
1:1 low 5.13 = 28.15 mph

5000 rpm with 33's
1:1 low 3.55 = 50.85 mph
1:1 low 4.10 = 44.03 mph
1:1 low 4.88 = 37.00 mph
1:1 low 5.13 = 35.19 mph

thats what i am doing wrong, im pulling down at 4000rpms where there is power instead of 5000 where im making roughly the same power and tq as a geo metro

Thx for the responses now I like RPMS but I dont have the engine for it , one could put step gears as mentioned but I know of some strong 2.8 trucks that are starting to use a lesser gear (400 series) cause they are not getting the wheel speed they need even tho there blowing the tires off the whole way one still needs a little go go .

This weekend I pulled 4 low ground speed was 28 next night same trac/sled cept it was tighter pulled 2nd hi same ground speed 28 mph so thats what I was looking for but I know I cant pull 4 low like that on a heavier sled , and wonder whats the best power to ground aspect low or hi

So what is the average or ideal ground speed needed to put you in the top spot?

I think Ed is saying that more revs keep the charger lit better than lower revs...less chance at huffing the charger. Like the time that you pulled 5th low & huffed your charger.

3rd low with 3.55 and 35" tires in a 5sp

2hi with 4.10 and 33 in a 5sp

4low with 5.13 and 33 in a 5sp

That all depends on your setup...cam profile, timing, charger are just a few factors.

Sounded like the truck was having fuelling problems the way it was cutting out and caused it to get under the charger at the end.

no it started messing up melting a piston if u was dirtslingers82 channel on youtube you will see the last couple of pulls before the last two that it melted down
