Where is the cheapest place to buy Castrol Syntorq gear oil? I need to change the oil in my 5 speed and this is the recommended oil. I know I can buy it at the Dodge dealer but I don't want to pay their outrageous prices. I know somebody has got to sell it cheaper. Thanks

Good luck. Dealer is probably the only place to get it with ease. Amsoil makes an oil, MTG, that works well. I have had it in mine for about 30K with no trouble.

I have run amsoil but i curently run Valvolene 10w30 full synthetic motor oil 5 qts that i buy at Auto zone and this was the reccomendation from the tranny shop that rebuilt my 4500. This seems to work really well, is easy to get and cheaper that the dodge stuff. Tim

Do U have brass synchros? If not, I wouldn't run it. I lost a tranny to that stuff.

Well here is the deal. My 5 speed has a bad grinding/vibration in 4th gear. Its really bad in 4th between 1500 and 2000 rpm. It has a lil vibration in 5th but not bad at all. I figured it might be a little low on oil. I ain't checked it yet, but I figure this would be a good time to go ahead and change the gear oil as it probably has not been changed in a while. The truck has 210k on it.

Do you guys think that it could be just low on oil or have the wrong oil or ???? I bought the truck with about 200k on it last summer and it has gradually got worse. What do you think it could be?

smoker, just my $.02 , but I'd say you have a bearing down.

As for the Syntorq, GM dealers had it cheap as I ever found it. I have run the Amsoil MTG for over 150K miles and it's great and cheaper than the Syntorq.

I just changed mine for the second time and found it easy to do with a lower unit pump for a boat motor. The adapter that came with it screwed right into the top PTO cover bolt hole and allowed me to put in 4.5 quarts which is what Standard Transmission recommends.

I think its on its way out. If its low enough on oil, so it caused a problem, adding more oil is not going to replace lost metal.

I like to see those changed once a year- 30-50,000 miles, on a good lube.(less miles with Syntorq, )Especially if you are towing, with horsepower. It makes a lot of heat.

Ok thanks for the replys. Thats not really what I was wanting to hear, but oh well.:o Ill go ahead and check the oil and replace it and see if it helps. This is kinda my daily driver and all the miles I have put on it have been highway. I bought the truck to make it into a sled puller for this summer.

Oh, sled puller, dont worry about it then, you will be inside it soon enough replacing big parts, lol

Lol, you're probably right! One more thing, I noticed too that when the oil is cold it doesnt do it nearly as bad. Just when it gets warm from long trips.

oils prolly breaking down.

im having good luck with the amsoil stuff, though i think its a little low, i only got about 4 qts in because the trans doesnt sit level in the truck.

Remove the shift tower and add a quart or two of syntorque. This will help with lube problems as you can overfill it through the top. I priced out syntorque at gm and dodge, dodge was cheaper by a few bucks at $16 per quart.

16...wow....mine down here wants $20......:bang

I am gonna try the amsoil next go round....

Update---

I checked the fluid level in my tranny this morning and it was nice and full. But I already had bought new fluid for $92  so i decided to go ahead and change it. I drained the old stuff out and it had a brown tint to it. The new stuff is crystal clear.

I went out for a lil test drive and wow, big difference. It didn't totally cure the vibraton but it is barely noticeable now. Shifts much nicer too. Thanks for all the replys guys.
