Which Cummins is easier/cheapest to modify?

Yeah I figured you would feel that way. To be honest I'm leaning heavily towards an older truck. I want to put the money in the engine this time instead of having a nice ride. Anyway thats why I started this thread; because I'm just looking right now. Trying to get some good ideas.
