Why No Garretts on 3rd Gens?

I have been looking around at turbo options lately trying to decide what I want and noticed that the few people that are running Garretts chargers are mostly 2nd Gens. What gives? If these ball bearing turbos are so sweet, how come I've never seen a sig with a single Garrett? I've heard they have an awesome spool up..what gives?

Scott, the owner of destroked has a garrett twinset on his truck. Elite spec'ed I think.

Probably mostly for the $$$. People would rather deal with a little lag than an empty wallet.

a borg warner/schwitzer with an ETT compressor wheel can offer similar spool per potential lbs/min and usually at a higher pressure ratio

I've never seen an advertised Garrett for my truck that has any more than "up to 550 hp" pasted next to it. I know there has to be some for 3rd gens that are higher than that on a Garrett single. And how frickin much dough we talkin for one of these things that nobody wants to buy one?

Their small chargers aren't expensive. The primary chargers are almost double the price of a BW, but have alot more housing options.

I run a stage 2 garrett on my 06. Spool is quick and it builds boost sooner. Cost was about $100.00 more than other turbo's of the same size. Its a great turbo if your not looking for big horsepower, a big improvent over stock I can run the smarty on the higher levels no problem and it tows better than my stock turbo did. Just my $.02

I run a Garrett #2 modified by tom at turbo resource, and it spools fast and moves alot of air. Running a pressure box and smarty jr I see about 38 psi and maybe 1250 egt tops. Worth the extra few bucks - for sure.

Saw one installed today on an 05. Not sure what model it is But it was BIG like an S480. Running it as a single and had to make a lot of changes to make it fit. Cant wait to see it pull Saturday!

I run a GT4094r as the secondary in my twins. At 80lbs/min, that puts it as the same air as a SB or super B special; however it spools much faster and at a lower rpm than the 66's and will support the same HP.

There is plenty of info on what a SB or super B special can support, just know the 4094 will do the same, but is more useful as a DD, is better in elevation due to the responsiveness and towing is a breeze with it. Very smooth. There are simply too few folks with any real experience with them so the knowledge and experience base is small--- folks tend to gravitate to what they know and have heard about.

There are usually about 4 A/R choices for each turbo by Garrett to help "tune" the turbo to each individuals use. I have found that the Garretts use a larger A/R on the EH than comparible turbos, yet spool faster on average. One can simply check out the compressor maps on Garrett's website to see what I mean. I use a .95 A/R on mine.

From my experience with the GT4208r as the primary in my twins, I can see it easily being a streetable single. It would behave similar to an Aurora 5000 in spool yet flow about 113 lbs/min. Again, there are 4 A/R's to choose from too.
I think that would be an awesome sled puller turbo for those that must run singles.

Nice to hear the BB twins are working well for you. I've thought about trying a BB on top. I just got my GT47 primary installed. Hoping to make my first trip with it today.

Hey Ron,

Yeah, they are really incredible-- especially compared to the old 35/3b setup. I think you're gonna be really impressed with the 47. My new primary is a hybrid gt4518r... a few lbs/min less than the 47 but faster spool.

If you are still using the external gate, you could put a pretty reasonable secondary on the top with a smaller EH and drive and tow very normally yet still not have any DP issues at highest HP. I think that is the hot ticket...
