In my 150/180 there's obviously a spring to control pressure.....what happens if that spring was completly removed and an external adjustable regulator was installed on the return hose ?

Actually got a few D-max guys doing and works great. THOUGH what i would recommend is still use a spring...just run the pressure down to say 8-10ish....as you would need to check the return flow...even though the regulator would more than likely do this.....it would a redundant check. You could also use a boosts reference to increase pressure under load at that point as well.
