i agree the 6.5 is light duty engine. but with a few modifications that the aftermarket has provided it can still be a decent truck

Makes a better boat anchor though...I use my trucks harder than that

I tell ya what! While y'all are tuning 6.5s, I'll be in my shop building a 4B Cummins that will smash it. LOL :hehe:
 
I'm not saying they are bad engines, just bad diesels...diesels are meant to work hard, and last a long time...the 6.5 is meant to cruise around in a 1/2 ton and get 25mpg...JMHO

GM brought out the 6.5 to haul light loads while being able to get decent mileage doing it. They are not made to be performance machines and most likely will never become performance machines. Perhaps that is why they put them in 1/2,3/4,1 ton pickups, subrubans, and tahoes, blazers, etc...

Actually the 6.5 is listed as a "light heavy duty engine" which just so happens to be the EXACT same way the Duramax is listed.

As for a "lope" tune as you call it, I'm very sure it is possible, however creating cylinder imbalances in an engine that has marginal crankshaft strength is a bad idea in my opinion.
 
I'm a big cummins fan here but I also own a 6.2 with a turbo. You cummins guys need to give credit where credit is due.

Fact 1. The GM 350 diesel was the first production diesel in light duty trucks. Yes, it was a heap (although not a converted gas as everyone says).

Fact 2. The 6.2l was a huge improvement in every way to the 350. Power was anemic but mileage was great and that was the purpose of the engine in the first place.

Fact 3. The 6.2l caused Ford to bring the Navistar IDI v8's to market in their pickups. This spurred Dodge into looking for diesel power for their trucks (hence, the cummins).

Fact 4. Outpowered by the diesels of the early 90s, GM tweaked their 6.2 to add power through turbocharging and a computerized IP and the 6.5 was born. GM could have designed an entirely new powerplant but the 6.5 was capable to produce similar stock HP/TQ numbers of the early cummins (although the cummins was much more modification friendly and a more rugged design).

Fact 5. 6.5TDs still power humvees. With updated blocks with better metalurgy and improved fueling, The newest 6.5's are offered at 300hp to motivate the latest humvees with heavier armor designed to protect troops from IEDs.

IMHO, Cummins is still King, but i respect all diesels.

I respect all diesels as well...but don't try coming around and blowing smoke about how tough and rugged the 6.5L is, and how people are building parts to help it live at levels even VE pumped Cummins can double

Not saying you did, but other people have...the 6.5L is fine for driving around, and getting good mileage...but it WILL have problems

Oh, sorry then...how about a VP pump? Guess what...there are 2 more better pumps out there for the Cummins...and even the HEUI Systems on the 6.0L and 7.3L Powerstrokes can double the power capabilities of the 6.5L...

My point is, that to make power with a 6.5L it would take parts that basically NO OTHER platform would take...and I'll bet the power AND durability still won't measure up

I'm all for trying new things, but I'm not for pissing money away on a platform that has proven to have catastrophic failures at stock power levels...I mean VP injection pumps are trash, but at least block and heads don't fail on them like clockwork.

I don't follow the Dodge/Ford engines very much at all, but are you saying they make 1400+HP with them? Besides P-pumped engines lol.
 
I will kiss someone's ass if a 6.5 will live at 450 hp with nothing but fueling.

im not new to the 6.5 scene. i know all about them and i know you cant switch tunes as of now. i was just wondering what you had to do in efi live to get a dmax to lope so i could to go to kennedy, westers, and heath and ask them to get me a custom reflash and give them some helpful hints on how to get it to work.

Wow! Well I needed a good laugh anyway.

In his defense Will, there are a couple VE pumped 12v trucks w/twins laying down 500 rwhp. Not many but they are around.
