ahale's 2wd shortbed 1stgen build

I plan to drive it quite a bit actually. my goal is to be able to drive it up to the strip, run consistent 10's and drive it home. 9's if I get it dialed in.

I'll probably copy max's street tire setup for now, with the 31x18.5x15 hoosier radials, and some cheepo 15x14 8 lug rims, if they clear d80 brakes something like this.. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/pcw-98-5481/overview/

Have your factory centers welded in a set big and little wheels. If the beauty rings will stick on the new pieces you'll be set.

Doubt they'll be DOT/racetrack approved at that point though.

so update,

took a look at a 8 lug 15x10 rim I had today, and fitted it on the d80. with 4.2ish inches of backspacing it seemed to hit the caliper just a tad. I figure a 3.5 inch backspacing may work on a 14inch rim, but there is no way to really tell unless I had dimensions.

next up, the 4 link came in the mail today. Some guy blew himself up at the place next door to my work yesterday so I had the day off to look at it....anyways, the 4 link is sort of sub par IMO. I should have built it (bring on the told-ya-so's). in reality its not the frame I'm disapointed with, but the heims, and links seem sort of lame when considering that a d80 with close to 2000ftlbs of tq through it and 18 inch slicks will be holding on for dear life.

I may end up calling Ruffstuf to get some better quality heims that dont look like they will wear out in 20 minutes.

sitting next to the frame...looks tiny. I will do some bracing to give it some extra strength.

the 72 showed up...quite a fine looking specimen.

annnnddd Westons newest design of spool flange. now I'm on the fence between running this 80 with the flange or building twins.

I also took the liberty to go hunting on my day off.

hunting for the smell of burt up automatics that is.

picked up an RE for the 89, an RH for the 94 (came with an np241), another 2wd RH for parts, on top of the crap I allready have. I wont run out of cores anytime soon, about 350$ into the whole lot!

I agree that the BH looks kinda puney next to the frame of the dodge , But with the correct gussets and such, I have a feeling you'll have plenty there to play with .

Its been done for a long time. Came back for new trans lines as the stock quick disconnects are leaking.

Left last night at 11pm to go drive 7 hrs to get a nice RE from Chris (clamdigger4) for the 89.

Full manual, converter, flexplate, even a shifter.

Besides getting the correct 32 spline output and adaptor that wraps up the trans for the 1stgen.

Did a partial trade with the 72, so back to the 80/flange it is.

Id ditch the Dana 80 and go with a Dana 60 bored for 35 spline and disc brake swap. Save quite a bit of weight and would be easier to obtain the right 4 link brackets.

I can cut a set of brackets easily. for the ease of it I'm going d80. over kill, yeah. but I have it.

I know its not always best to build around what you already have, but ill let it slide.

If your concerned about going really fast, you should be concerned about the weight of the 80...I vote go with the 60 as well, you can even do 40 spline axles if your worried about breaking it.

While I agree the 60 will take it when built right. I have an 80 in my truck because I had it laying around. Works just fine.
