Lets see if we can have a discussion about safety in any class going quicker than 11.50. Gary's crash is more than eye-opening for alot of us. i personally would like to see full cages in anything faster than 11.50. sure, it takes some of the comfort out, but going from a bar to a cage seems to have been a great help this past weekend. Keep in Mind that Gary went through the traps at 91(in the 8th). Most everyone on here goes that fast through the traps in the 1/4.

Before this gets rolling I will say this: This is a serious discussion and off topic posts will not be tolerated.

tubing size?

I think you are right Tim.

Has anybody done any research to find out what tubing size and wall thickness would be sufficient for the wieghts of these trucks? I think that would be a good place to start. It would help with knowing the costs and knowing how many mounting points it would need to be safe.

Just my $.02

2 inch, .120 wall DOM should be sufficent, NASCAR uses .095 wall Chromoloy for their cages and they are doing 190+......i think as a whole group safety should be number one priority, its getting more and more prevalent in the pulling trucks, and as individuals we should be looking at this from a personal stand point, should your kids and wife have to make funeral arrangements or pay hospital bills after a wreck.........cause that is your ultimate decision, any truck running faster than 11.99 should have atleast a 6 point cage......

as much as some will hate it... i agree. I would even say maybe 12.49 needs a bar, and go 11.49 for the 6 pt cage for vehicles over a set weight limit.

Maybe instead of jumping from a bar to a 6 point, you can have a middle point with a 4 point.

You would want to implement it over time and do so in a manner that would allow the people who are on a tight budget enough notice to get their cage in place and not miss races.

I also agree that safety should be #1. But, on the same hand, if Diesel motorsports starts losing the "budget racers"... it will die. I just think it needs to be done, but done with everyone in mind.

you want to know why they dont want a cage, cause they all got this B.S. "street" truck mentality, just like alot of the sled pullers, there is nothing street about those trucks except the tires, 90% of those trucks come in a trailer and leave in a trailer.....they want to "gain" respect from the all the "cool" kids and say, well my truck is 100% street......get over the macho bull**** and get safe or your gonna die.....its simple as that, i seen what crappy work gets you, severely hurt, take it from someone that has pulled people from burning racecars and loaded injured racers onto stretchers, ive seen fire suits melted to people legs cause some thought it would be easier to rig a oil line up than do it right.....

The thing I worry about more than anything is the momentum that a 3 ton truck carries. It takes alot more to slow down 6k at 90 than it does for half that.(3k)

by a budget racer are you guys talking about the guy that spent 25K to buy a (insert brand) and another 10K on (insert parts) to go that fast and your gonna ***** and moan about a 1500-2000 dollar safety cage.....if your gonna complain about the cost of safety equipment dont race or step down a class and run cheaper.....

FYI, Roll Bars are 4 point, 5 if you count the door bar. (Main hoop ends, and 2 down tubes, Door bar [from main hoop to drivers foot-well].)

What they lack is a halo, and support for said surround.

Well said. After looking at it that way... I agree!!

good luck guys I as at a race heard a guy *****ing becouse he had to get a fire jacket be couse how fast he went and that diesel fuel does not burn

don't get me wrong I am all for the saftey stuff but its going to be hard to get it though peoples heads. and if your at a track that does not enforce stuff it will be even worse. I even seen one truck after tech take four of the eight lug nuts off to try and get the truck to run faster

Guy's, since I have become the so called Poster child for this let me comment. Regardless of the fact if it was my fault, the truck, or the track stuff like this is gonna happen. I honestly believe that if my rollcage would not have been in that truck I would not be here. David Dunbar and I spoke this morning and I am going to allow him total access to the rollcage and whatever else he need's to look at for future modification's, and rule change's. I know a lot of people are gonna ***** about either slowing their truck down or put a rollcage in it. But fella's I can say this much, at 91 mph you CANNOT feel a guard rail, or a powerpole in these truck's. There is so much kinetic energy in these 4700 lb truck's that it is gonna take some serious safety equipment to stop them. I am already in the process of building another one and it will be going all the way to S&S in Kentucky for a full rollcage. I do not want to bury a "Friend" because they are too stubborn to put a cage in. Thank's to all of you in the Diesel community for your support. Wrongway is comin back!!!!!!!!!:cheer: Gary

also removable door bars are a great option for those rue street trucks that are in the low 11 range also...take them out when driving on the street.

As the wife of a racer and watching the wreck on Saturday, I now realize the importance of the roll cage and safety harnesses.

The next safety issue I would really like to see addressed is to make some type of neck brace or neck support mandatory, especially for those running 10.99 or faster.

Excellent Idea. At minimum a neck "donut"

foot ball players wear them, and I have yet to see a ball player run 11 in the 1/4... just saying, you guys are right, these are very heavy trucks and getting faster every event.

I think a "donut" would work fine. I actually bought Micky one in Moroso last October and he has yet to wear it...

We talked about it on the way home yesterday and I think he has finally changed his mind about wearing it...

And for all of the racers safety, I would like to see everyone do it...

And NO excuses guys... they are only about $40

Funny how when given the option, the Racer's wives always err on the side of caution. Perhaps we should have them making the rules and doing tech inspections. It is good to see our better halves being the voice of reason. I wont listen to half of the guys here, but I'll listen to my wife.... Most of the time.
