Anyone know anything about these old trucks? Im looking at buying one this weekend. It has a 6-71 detroit and a 9speed eaton. 430k. Single drive with a tag axle. Integrated sleeper. Anything I should look out for on these detroits?
I am looking into it just for fun, pulling at the fairs, and towing a trailer with all our pulling rigs.
Guy wants $2300 I think its not a bad deal.

Inline or V motor? You could spend the same or a little more and have a S60 motor.

That seem like a good price. Since it mechanical you can get some free power out of it compared to an electronically controlled engine. It wont get the best mileage but since its a toy it wont matter.

I woukdn't pay money for a truck with any 71 series in it.

Why don't you like the 71 series? Im just curious, not out to start a fight, just want to know facts so I know what im getting into.
And its a inline motor

Anemic at best. If it were a 92, 6v or 8v that'd be ok. But a 60 is sweet. They're my favorite. Get into a ddec III or better, and you got a nice engine.

Truckpaper.com, you can search for hours! There are literally tons of trucks in the 5-6k range with alot better motor options than a 2stroke detroit!

A 6-71 is easy math...6 X 71 = 426 cu. in. ...not much bigger than a duramax and slower than molasses in January with a load behind it! Then again, you southern boys don't know what cold molasses is! LOL

Thanks, ill have to check that out. I talked the guy down to 2k already, probably can get it cheaper when I go look at it. Is that detroit that much of a turd? Never driven one. Can you even turn it up? I have also been looking at a 1978 kenworth with a big cam cummins for $3500, but it has an aluminum frame.

Go for the KW. 855cid vs 426cid. You said it was going to be a toy so I wouldn't worry about the frame.

let's not forget that a 2 stroke has twice the number of power strokes per RPM, so 426 x 2 = 852

now, the old 2 strokes need lots of RPM to make power and they drink fuel, but for a couple grand, I'd like to have one just so I could beat the tar out of it and listen to it sing (scream?)

They might scream but that about as far as it goes. They are best at simply converting liquid fuel into noise! LOL

Thats not how they work.

Plus, the 855 is turbocharged, putting it drastically further ahead.
So by your logic, an 855 with 18psi boost = 1923

Every down stroke is a power stroke in a 2 cycle engine. That doesn't make it better than a 4 cycle.

Seriously, a 6-71 is a waste of time in a big truck.

take it for a test drive, see if you can hack the noise, then park it idling and see if it pukes, pisses, and slobbers oil everywhere, if it's not bad offer him $500. for it, it will meet your needs

6v-71 is barely even good for turning diesel into noise......I wouldn't even think about it, kenworth FTW

The best way to drive those old detroits is slam your cawk in the door and then drive it pissed off LOL

Wooooooo! Powerhouse!

Feel the power bishes!!

LOL

2-stroke Detroits sounds so damn good their other short comings are forgivable....when you're just screwing around with them and not living with one every day that isLOL.

that Euclid very likely has a 6-110 in it. not a 6-71.

If its truely a toy you're looking for, a 6-71 will leave you sadly dissapointed. Its bearly enough in a 2 ton grain truck. If you want horsepower, start with anything other than a 6-71.

You can make gobs of power with a 8v-92 or 12v-71. Theres a local 1966 Kenworth pulling truck with a highly modified 12v-71 and allison HT750 automatic. No governor. many fuel components from the 149 series.
