84 Chevy Crew Cab 12v Conversion

Diesel Newb
Here is my current project. This is my first conversion so I thought I would post it to maybe get some more opinions on some things. Ive had this truck for almost two years and I'm already on my second tear down of it.

Here is some history on the truck.

I bought an 85 crew cab and stripped it down to the frame and converted the truck to 4x4. The truck was a dually and I just used a Dana 44 and the Dana 70HD rear axle and threw some single wheels on the truck.

It had a 454 in it but it did not run that good and it was going to need a lot of work. So I traded it for a 6.2 diesel (Not that great of an idea).

I then started the 4x4 conversion.

Got that all mounted up and painted the frame

I was running a SM465 and Np205 behind the 6.2

After the frame was ready I needed to start messing it the body. But the body on the 85 was rusted out so I picked up a 84 cc for the body.

Next thing was fitting a manual transmission into a automatic truck so I did some floor modifications and made this.

While I had the cab all stripped down I decided it would be easier to get some paint on the cab while it was this way so I painted it white.

And I had a good front clip and was painting I painted that as well.

Doors and bed were no good and i went ahead and threw the dually bed and dual wheels back on it and got it running.

Then the truck caught on fire and I found Dieselwrencher on another site and decided that the 6.2 had to go and that I wanted a cummins so I tore it down a few months ago. I installed a new 4 inch lift kit and I am currently working on getting the frame boxed from the front of the truck to the back of the cab.

Yeah I'm glad I decided to go with the 12v too. The 6.2 was lacking so much and the cummins has do much to offer! Good luck to your son in law. These trucks can be hard to find in good shape, but it sounds like a good one. The Perkins sounds cool!

The 372 already has a allison adaptor for a AT545 if you put a no.sae 3 bellhousing on a 1000 ser. 5sp. or 6sp. will bolt up.like I did in my Ford.

That's cool. I like my manuals behind diesels except for a manual behind a 6.2. They seem to have the power at higher rpm's and so an auto works best behind them. Does sound like a sweet build tho!

I like the manals also.I have a NV4500 behind the 5.9 in my Chevy C10 2wd,had a 10sp in my ford I'm just getting lazy when we go to pulls nobody would drive the 10sp.that is why I went with the 6sp ally out of a 06 chevy. We have tuned the ally with EFI for lower rpm,s working good sofore have to hook on to the 32 ft.Inclosed to see how it will react all though I have tapshift.don't have T/H working yet.
When you get a clutch get a good one to hold what ever HP, you have.

Yeah a 10 speed would probably get to the point it was annoying. Would be sweet tho! Allison's are good transmissions. I almost got one from dieselwrencher but it wasn't any good. As for the clutch yeah I plan on getting a good one. Might try to find a used one at first cause I'm just a broke college student. I think me and Ryan (dieselwrencher) are going to build it up around 400 or 500 hp.

dont forget the steering box brace and i would up grade the front shackle hange mounts as well here a link to what im talkign about..Offroad Design - Chevy GM Front Heavy Duty Shackle Hanger

my 75 K20 is getting a Dmax/4l85/241C and a DS drop D60

I am boxing the frame and so the bolts for the steering box will get sleeved. So the steering box should be fine. As for the bigger shackle mounts not really sure that this truck needs them. The stock ones should work fine with the truck just being a tow pig.
