arrow dynamic cutting weight

Would removing the bed floor of a dedicated race truck slow it down (catch air). Planning on a hard cover but want to cut the floor out. Thanks Chris

Arrow?:hehe:

I think you mean Aero :poke:

And you would want the air to pass as smoothly as possible under the truck;)

Put louvers in the bed to let the air escape...you'd also be able to do the world's coolest burnouts cause all the tire smoke would come up through the bed. There actually was an El Camino that ran 9s up in Redding about 10 years ago that had a bed like that.

You could also just use tin and make a "fake" underside to the bed. I think Drake's truck has something similar to that.

The bed's not exactly the best place to cut weight, I'd lose the transfer case and front axle first.....

I have cut every thing else out, it's the only thing left. One more year with the 4x4. :bang I also want to keep the whole body steel.

I think Dale Smith did that and had to put a floor back in it because it was catching so much air it was lifting the rear end and loosing traction.

was going to do the same thing but with use some type of big vent built into the tailgate. how much weight are you taking out of the truck, how striped down are you going

I would like to know how much you can actually strip down these trucks also. I have mine pretty gutted but still could do a little more. Box is gutted on mine also but still looks normal from the outside. I still have all my steel panels to. Also trucks I'm talking about are the quad cab shortbox and 4wd. Mine weighs in at 6100 with me in it and I'm at 175lbs.

Last year was 6700 with me in it 200lbs. Trying to get down to 5500. will post back when the race car guys bring the scales over. If i don't need it to roll it got cut off!

Don't forget the little stuff...bumper brackets, batteries, seat mounts, etc. can really add up. A friend of a friend turned an 03 Cobra Mustang into a drag car, and by the time they were done gutting it they'd removed 72 lb just in wiring and relays! In the early 60s guys used to even grind their blocks to save weight in their front engined dragsters! Just gotta be creative.

swiss cheese the frame and add back minimal bracing if you think it needs some of the support back that you removed by swiss cheesing it? :D

I think Phil's truck Super Red has the bed floor cut out. And there is also a silver 4x4 2nd gen truck that does as well, but I can't remember who's it is?

Heres some basic weight info:

Regular cab short bed: (calculated numbers)
4x4 auto 6295 nv4500 6322 nv5600 6490
4x2 auto 5875 nv4500 5949 nv5600 6114

that is including no passangers, no cargo, full fluids

for those running fuel cells the stock tank (35 gallons, i dont know if the ex cab short beds use the 26 gallon tank) holds 250 lbs of fuel. #2 diesel is 7.15lbs per gallon.

should be a good start, but getting your truck down to 5500lbs with you in it, is over 1000lbs.

Hey Chris, should have bought a 1st gen. Sure the doors don't shut right and everything rattles, but they start out at about 6000 lbs.

cant speak for the dodges but my truck should be down to around 54-5500 lbs in 4x4 trim ( if my calcs are right anyway ) next year and from theweights posted they seem fairly close to the dmax weights maybe a bit higher . , like said got to get creative , and of course depends on class your running for rules .
